Companies like Hyperloop One and Hyperloop Transportation are hard at work building test tracks for the new technology, but Elon Musk’s own SpaceX may be leading the pack. A recent photograph shared on Reddit shows the company’s test track coming together near LA.
Specifically, the company appears to be building its hyperloop track right through the center of Hawthorne, which is located in southwestern Los Angeles County. The track will be a mile long when completed, with a pretty tight 6-foot diameter. It will be able to create a 99.8 percent vacuum environment inside, which should allow for some insanely fast speeds.
The new track is being created as part of the SpaceX Hyperloop Pod Design Competition. Earlier this year the company invited students and engineers to enter their own designs. The next step will be to actually test the winning submissions from the top two dozen or so teams, though it’s unclear exactly when that will happen.
Assuming it actually works, the hyperloop should be capable of safely transporting humans at speeds of up to 760 miles per hour. At that rate, you could get from LA to San Francisco in just 30 minutes. The technology is still mostly theoretical at this point, but it looks it could be put to the test pretty soon.
