The latest report suggests that the Galaxy S8 will feature a bezel-less or edge-to-edge display and the display area ratio would be 90 percent or more than that.
As Samsung recovers itself from the Galaxy Note 7 debacle, the anticipation and excitement for the Galaxy S8 has already begun. Rumors and leaks about the Galaxy S8 have already been popping up every now and then. If everything goes right, then Samsung will unveil the Galaxy S8 at Mobile World Congress 2017 in February. Samsung has already promised that the Galaxy S8 will feature “slick design” and “and improved camera”. Adding to that, a new report suggests that the Galaxy S8 will go big on display taking up more than 90 percent space.
The Investor reports that the Galaxy S8 could feature a bezel-less, or edge-to-edge display and it will be based on organic light-emitting diode technology. Although this wasn’t confirmed for the Galaxy S8, it was however hinted that the development is taking place. The report further quotes Samsung’s Park Won-sang as saying, “Samsung Display would roll out a full-screen display whose display area ratio (a scale that measures space taken up by a display on the front part of a handset) reaches more than 90 percent next year.” Park Won-sang is a principal engineer at the display-making unit of Samsung. He further said that Samsung may go for smartphones with display ratio up to 99 percent. As of now, smartphones have display area ratio around 80 percent.
Park also showed a concept image of a Galaxy S7 edge smartphone which featured a full screen without a home button. While displaying the concept image, he said that the edge-to-edge display will allow all the sensors like the fingerprint sensor to be built under the screen.
The Galaxy S8 is already rumored to feature a 5.5-inch 4K panel with dual-curved edges and Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection. The smartphone is also expected to come with an optical fingerprint sensor and ditch the physical home button. The latest report about bezel-less and edge-to-edge display for the Galaxy S8 actually complement its previous leaks and rumors. Even though Samsung hasn’t confirmed anything, we can definitely expect big developments on the Galaxy S8’s display.
With dual cameras becoming a huge trend this year, the bezel-less display seems to be the next in line. Xiaomi has already stepped foot on this journey as it recently unveiled its concept smartphone the Mi MIX. The smartphone features a 6.4-inch near bezel-less OLED display with screen-to-body ratio of 91.3 percent. Joining them, if rumors are to be believed, would be Apple with its next generation iPhone 8. Apple is reportedly planning to ditch the existing LTPS panel with OLED panels. A concept image was also made for the iPhone 8 which showed the smartphone sporting a full screen curved OLED display. Samsung could join the dual cameras trend as the Galaxy S8 is expected to feature dual rear cameras, which is likely to be engineered by SEMCO. The dual cameras could be a pair of 16-megapixels and 8-megapixels snappers. Other than that, the smartphone could be backed by a 4,200mAh battery, feature an iris scanner, wireless and rapid charging, and built-in mini projector.
The Galaxy S8 is also expected to come with S-Pen support and Galaxy S7-like water and dust resistance capabilities. In addition to the “slick design” and “improved camera”, it was also announced that the Galaxy S8 will come with “an enhanced artificial-intelligence service”. This clearly hints at the Viv AI assistant created by Viv Labs which will most likely debut on the Galaxy S8. Samsung had acquired Viv Labs, the company behind Apple’s Siri and Viv Ai is poised to function better than Siri.
