Samsung has started rolling out an update for its business-focused Knox on the Samsung Galaxy S5. The new KNOX 2.0 features a series of core security enhancements designed to provide better protection for enterprise mobility.
The South Korean electronics giant announced Wednesday that KNOX 2.0 is available worldwide, but the update rolls out only to the new Galaxy S5 handsets for now. Described as a portfolio of multiple products and services, the new improved Knox is said to offer a secure mobile platform so the customers could use their devices without any security threats.
In particular, the update integrates a dedicated app store and split billing that enable enterprise users to pay for work and personal calls separately. Then, in today’s age when modern businesses are looking to implement their Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) strategies, KNOX 2.0 comes out to be a solid attempt to reassure and convince IT departments to adopt consumer phones and tablets.
“The new KNOX 2.0 features cutting-edge core platform security, improved user experience, and an expansive ecosystem to better meet the rapidly evolving enterprise mobility needs of customers, including KNOX Workspace, EMM, Marketplace and Customization,” Samsung says on its official blog.
The original product that launched in 2013, comprising the core security platform and app container, has been renamed KNOX Workspace, while two new cloud-based services are also added to expand the Knox ecosystem. These include KNOX EMM and KNOX Marketplace, and a customization service, KNOX Customization that target specifically to Server Message Blocks (SMBs).
Here’s a number of new and evolved features offered by the KNOX 2.0 platform:
KNOX Workspace offers advanced security enhancements to better protect device integrity from kernel to apps.
KNOX container provides support for all Android apps from the Google Play Store.
Third-party container provides a better policy control compared to the Native SE for Android.
Universal MDM Client (UMC) and Samsung Enterprise Gateway (SEG) work to pre-register the user profile making the enrollment process a lot simpler than before.
KNOX EMM provides cloud-based Mobile Device Management and Identity and Access Management to allow IT firms implement or augment their company guidelines.
KNOX Marketplace is a dedicated app store for SMBs to find, buy and use KNOX and enterprise cloud apps in a unified environment.
KNOX Customization offers users to create highly customized B2B solutions with off-the-shelf hardware.
KNOX 2.0 is currently available on the Galaxy S5, and more Samsung devices will receive it via OS upgrades in the coming months. Enterprise users with the previous version installed on their handsets will be automatically updated to KNOX 2.0. However, to use the platform, IT managers first have to activate the functionality.
