Companies are creating new lenses with the hopes of adding technology into various products that can help the lifestyles of individuals. It has long been a task for people to create lenses for individuals who are struggling to see clearly. And while traditional lenses already work, it is no surprise that the tech industry wants to change the way people live, including how they see. And now, researchers at the Australian National University (ANU) have developed a simple, inexpensive method for creating lenses that would open doors for researchers, students and hobbyists.

According to a new report, these new lenses are baked compared to the traditional lenses that are polished and curved until it is ready. The traditional method is costly, so this new baking method could allow for more people to experiment with the creation method. Scientists can now bake their own lenses by harnessing the power of gravity with only an oven, a glass slide and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) — a common, gel-like polymer.

“What I’m really excited about is that it opens up lens fabrication technology,” Steve Lee, lead author of the study that helped develop this technique, has revealed. “It’s a low cost and easy lens-making recipe.” Rather than the traditional costs of around $500, these lenses cost around $2 per pair. Because of the costs of these lenses, it is possible that many people are thinking about what they can do with them. Given how Google is working with Google Glass these days, one can imagine that the company would be interested in obtaining these lenses for new projects.

Plus, this kind of lense would be good for those who use contact lenses, but can’t afford to constantly get new lenses for their eyes. What do you think of these new and affordable lenses? Are you surprised that you can create lenses for the price of a cheap cup of coffee?
