Many consumers buy an activity tracker because they want a 24-7 fitness coach. First and second generation trackers track activity and give feedback on progress. Fitness technology devices are moving towards more sophisticated coaching features. For example, Atlas unveiled their Kickstarter campaign for their new Shape by Atlas program.

“For the first time, you’re no longer bombarded with step summaries or suggestions to get eight hours of sleep.” – Peter Li, Peter Li, CEO of Atlas Wearables, Inc. ” Shape outlines a better path forward in an easy to use, stylish new band.”

Shape aims to be a wearable fitness coach. The system includes a sleek wrist-worn tracker, the Atlas app and cloud-based dashboard.

Shape processes your daily routine to see how your training affects you. It goes a step farther than most activity trackers. It designs workouts for you.

During those workouts, Shape guides you with voice prompts to complete your workout. Shape even offers form and intensity cues.

My Previous Experience With Atlas

In the interest of full disclosure, I should mention that I have one of Atlas’ fitness trackers. While testing the tracker, I was impressed with the ability to identify most of the exercises I do. Even more impressive was the capacity to learn custom exercises. This learning and recognition system wasn’t perfect. It still was impressive for a device that is worn on one wrist.

(I previously mentioned my experience with Atlas Wearables in this Tech and Burgers post.)

About Shape by Atlas Personalized Training Plans

I realized it was just a matter of time before Atlas would be able to provide form cues. It looks like Shape may be accomplishing that.

“For the first time, a 24/7 Fitness Coach is possible. Shape leverages the muscle within Atlas Motion Tracking to count every rep and analyze your form. It’s like we somehow managed to fit the experience of a thousand trainers into each and every Shape band.” – Said Li.

The Atlas and Atlas Shape devices track movement and heart rate. Their proprietary Coach AI system is pre-programmed with hundreds of exercises including running, calisthenics, and popular strength training activities.

At first, Shape workouts will focus on bodyweight exercises. According to Atlas, the training plans follow  4-week mesocycles to keep you challenged.

Li explained: “Shape analyzes your body 24/7 and creates the best workout to help you reach your goals. It analyzes and compares your history with our database of over 1.3 million sets and over 100,000 personal bests to literally find the best path forward for you to succeed.”
