Fingerprint scanners are now becoming a common feature among mid and premium Android-powered smartphones. But there are some who believe that there are other ways to secure a smartphone, like in the form of an iris scanner on the newly launched TCL Pride T500L smartphone in India.

For the unaware, TCL is the parent company of the Alcatel OneTouch brand, so we may see some of the iris scanning tech make it to those smartphones as well.

An iris scanner for security is indeed something that Microsoft’s Windows crowd will now be familiar with, thanks to its use in the just announced Lumia 950 and 950 XL smartphones. But there have been Android smartphones in the past like the ViewSonic-made V55 and the Fujitsu Arrows NX F-04G flagship as well. So while Android does not natively support iris scanners yet, it still makes good sense to try out something new.

However, what is important here is the price and TCL seems to have an interesting hardware package for an asking price of Rs 10,499.

You get a 5 inch Full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels) IPS display on the front. Hiding behind it lies a 2.5 GHz octa-core processor with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage. The smartphone also allows for storage expansion via its microSD memory card slot.

The camera department consists of a 13MP AF primary camera on the back (with an LED Flash) and an 8MP on the front. The primary unit also packs in electronic image stabilisation (EIS).

The TCL Pride T500L packs in 4G and 3G bands in a dual SIM set up. The connectivity options include the usual Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and GPS. The handset is currently exclusive to Snapdeal and available in both white and Slate grey colour options.
