Google was said to be in talks to acquire video-streaming service Twitch, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal on Sunday. Officials at Google and Twitch declined to comment on the matter.
According to Variety, Google plans to buy video game streaming site Twitch.tv for over $1 billion and its YouTube division is heading up the acquisition.
According to Arstechnica,”Twitch is best thought of as a live streaming, gaming-focused version of YouTube. The streamer loads up his or her favorite game, and the audience watches and participates via an integrated chat room. Twitch recently made headlines as the host of Twitch Plays Pokémon, a social experiment where over 100,000 people simultaneously played a single instance of Pokémon.”
The report said the size of the deal could not be learned and discussions between the parties were at an early stage. In addition, the company was said to be looking at raising additional funding instead of selling itself.
In September, Twitch raised $20 million in funding from Thrive Capital, WestSummit Capital and Take-Two Interactive Software Inc, among other parties.
