“I am” is an abstractly named herbal tea in the Shoti Maa Chakras tea lineup, and it also has a rather abstract product description, which reads: “If the storms of life surrounds us, we need strong roots. Sage, Ginger and Elderflower assist you with their friendly power and heat. They encourage you to take your place in the world.” I guess you really have to be in touch with your spiritual side to really understand this tea’s “purpose”, although of course I drink plenty of teas simply because they taste good and not because it is supposed to have any sort of physiological, psychological, or other effect on me. The tea comes packaged in individually wrapped staple-less and glue-less teabags, and the packaging emphasizes some of the more dominant ingredients: sage, ginger, and elderberry. Additionally, the tea contains lemon grass, lemon juice, licorice, peppermint, cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, and turmeric. So there are lots of Indian chai spices, but also lots of other flavors, altogether seeming like a sort of mish-mash of herbs and spices. The contents of the teabag are finely ground pieces of the various ingredients, too small for me to distinguish any one ingredient from the other. I infused the teabag in six ounces of boiling water for about four minutes. The tea is a bright yellowish-green color with a decidedly pungent herbal aroma. When I sipped the tea, the sage was clearly the key player in this tea. For me, I found this a bit odd, as I tend to associate sage with cooking more so than with drinking, so it was almost as if I was drinking a meat rub. I never really got to the point where I loved this tea, but as I continued to drink it, I did begin to appreciate it. The ginger and licorice give a definite kick at the end of each sip, but surprisingly many of the spicy ingredients that I would expect to be able to pinpoint individually all just mesh into a collective botanical and slightly medicinal flavor. In all, this wasn’t my favorite tea, and I would probably drink it again, but I would advise that you need to be a fan of sage to find this tea enjoyable since it is the leading flavor and sage isn’t exactly the most popular flavor in the herbal tea world.
