(Washington Exmainer) – The Dallas Morning News has experienced a noticeable decline in subscriptions following its endorsement of Hillary Clinton.

“[S]ome people have cancelled their subscriptions, so we lost some customers at a time when it’s tough to lose customers,” editor Mike Wilson told the Washington Examiner Tuesday evening.

Earlier, in an interview with Poynter, Wilson said the Dallas Morning News experienced some unpleasant pushback after it announced its support for Clinton, breaking its more than 75-year-old tradition of endorsing GOP candidates for president.

“Certainly we’ve paid a price for our presidential recommendation, but then, we write our editorials based on principle, and sometimes principle comes at a cost,” he said. “I’ve had a lot of conversations with readers lately, and I respect their views and their right to disagree with us. The most important thing to us is that they vote, even if it’s not for our favorite candidate, because democracy doesn’t work if people don’t vote.”

Wilson said he hopes that those who’ve unsubscribed in anger will at some point return.

“I believe The Dallas Morning News offers a lot of value to readers — even when they disagree with a particular editorial view,” he said.

Some people were so upset with the Dallas Morning News’ endorsement of Clinton, that protesters actually showed last week outside the paper’s offices.

Wilson went out and addressed their concerns, and detailed his experience later on social media.

The last time the Dallas Morning News endorsed a Democrat for president was before World War II, which makes sense given the general makeup of Texas politics.

But in an editorial published on Sept. 7, the paper said it simply could not give its support to GOP nominee Donald Trump.

“There is only one serious candidate on the presidential ballot in November. We recommend Hillary Clinton,” the paper’s editorial board said. “We’ve been critical of Clinton’s handling of certain issues in the past. But unlike Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton has experience in actual governance, a record of service and a willingness to delve into real policy.”

“Resume vs. resume, judgment vs. judgment, this election is no contest,” they wrote. “Hillary Clinton has spent years in the trenches doing the hard work needed to prepare herself to lead our nation. In this race, at this time, she deserves your vote.”
