‘An enormous amount of violence in that garage’

(TC Palm) - 1:33 p.m.: A woman at the Alpha Delta Phi house on FSU’s campus said from an upstairs balcony that no one named Austin Harrouff is a member of the fraternity. However, multiple photos on Harrouff’s Facebook page show him at the Heritage Grove house, a fraternity and sorority housing complex about a mile from the main campus.

1:11 p.m.: FSUPD has offered to assist South Florida authorities in their investigation. Harrouff has not had any prior contact with university police.

12:49 p.m.: Harrouff was an International Baccalaureate student at Suncoast Community High School, a magnet school in Riviera Beach, according to his personal statement posted on the National Collegiate Scouting Association’s website. He was interested in playing football in college, his statement said.

He joined the wrestling team at Suncoast as a sophomore and was named captain before his senior year, his statement said.

According to MaxPreps, a college football recruiting site, the guy played football at Suncoast High School in 2014-2015. He is listed at 6-feet tall and 200 pounds.

Harrouff is from Jupiter, according to his Facebook.

12:08 p.m.: Amy Lourie pulled up in a blue Jeep and appeared overcome with emotion when she learned what happened.

“They were great neighbors and they were always having fun and always kind to everybody,” Lourie said. “They had a golf cart, they would go around, ride their dog around.”

Lourie, who has lived in neighborhood since 2003, said the couple opened their garage doors and had a television and chairs outside. “If there was something going on there would be John and Michelle waving from their garage, watching the game or having fun,” Lourie said. “they hang out in their garage and watch the dogs and talk to the neighbors.”

11:54 a.m.: Photo of suspect released. He hasn’t been charged yet, but sheriff says his people are working with the State Attorney’s Office on that now. The next news conference is set for 3 p.m.

11:48 a.m.: Victims identified: John Joseph Stevens III, 59; and Michelle Karen Mishcon, 53.

11:38: News conference has ended.

11:37: Parents and fraternity brothers were looking for him before attack.

11:34: Suspect is Austin Kelly Harrouff, a 19-year-old student at Florida State University.

11:33: Neighbor who tried to intervene was “outmanned” sheriff says.

11:30 a.m.: Woman being sought last night was victims’ daughter and stepdaughter. She was not harmed.

11:27 a.m.:  Suspect was with his parents at dinner at Duffy’s earlier in the night when he became agitated, sheriff says.

11:24 a.m.: Victims did not know attacker, evidence shows. Victims randomly attacked while sitting in their open garage, sheriff says.

11:22 a.m.: News conference begins. First two deputies on scene had tremendous difficulty subduing attacker. Guns not used because of fears of hitting victim.

11:03 a.m.: News conference delayed. Two-minute warning will be issued before it starts.

10:58 a.m.: Watch livestream of Martin County sheriff’s news conference set to begin at 11 a.m.

10:45 a.m.: Southeast Kokomo Lane is a residential street of well-kept homes and neatly-manicured lawns. Palm tree lined sidewalks are on both sides of the street. Melissa McElree, who lives nearby, said she was acquainted with the male victim and that their dogs were friendly.

“Every morning our dog goes over and they do their little meet and greet,” McElree said. “We always just chatted, a couple of times a week. I’d see him occasionally at Juno Beach because he’d bring his dog down there.”

She described him as a nice person. “I know that in the morning the garage doors were always open and he would hang out there in the morning,” McElree said.

She said she thought the residents of the home were a husband and wife and a daughter, said to be in her mid 20s. She said she thought they were boating enthusiasts and had two dogs.

Neighbor Michele Antoniewicz said she’s lived on the street for 11 years. She said there’s a mix of families with children and retirees.

“It’s a really beautiful neighborhood. Quiet,” she said. “People take pride in their homes. We’ve never had an issue at all over here.”

Antoniewicz said she knew the victims, describing them as “hardworking, good people.”

10:15 a.m.: Man who was killed used to raise his garage door each morning and sit in a chair, according to neighbors.

10 a.m.: Kokomo Lane area is quiet; neighbors in this affluent community staying indoors. No police activity.

9:50 a.m.: The suspect is in a hospital in Palm Beach County. He’s believed to have given officers a fake name. Sheriff’s officials still trying to verify his real name.

9:30 a.m.: To get the suspect off a victim last night, the suspect was Tased and then bitten by a Jupiter police dog, according to Martin County sheriff’s spokeswoman Trisha Kukuvka.

8:45 a.m.: A neighbor was stabbed while trying to break up the initial fight last night. That neighbor is in the hospital, sheriff’s officials said.

A husband and wife, in their late 40s or early 50s, were stabbed to death about 9:20 p.m. Monday night in the 19000 block of Southeast Kokomo Lane in Tequesta, according to the sheriff. She was in the garage. Her husband was outside on the driveway and the suspect was on top of him as deputies arrived.

It took a number of deputies and a K-9 dog using “as much force as physically possibly” to get the suspect off, Snyder said. The suspect, address unknown, was taken to a Palm Beach hospital for treatment. As of 7 a.m. Tuesday, he had not been jailed in Martin County, according to jail officials. Deputies are looking into whether he gave a false name.

“I wouldn’t be surprised to find out if it (a cause) was Flakka (a drug),” Snyder said, but that won’t be known until toxicology reports are in.

The suspect and the victim “clearly knew each other,” Snyder said of the suspect and the victim. The motive is unknown. “It could have been domestic, a relationship.”

Before deputies arrived, a good Samaritan who tried to help also was seriously stabbed and is hospitalized, Snyder said. “He has substantial trauma.” The person heard screaming and contacted the Sheriff’s Office.

When deputies arrived, said Snyder, they found a gruesome crime scene.

Neither of the victims are being identified until next of kin are notified. An extensive search of the home will take place after a search warrant is obtained, Snyder said.

Investigators are trying to to contact a female associate of the suspect. She is described as a 26-year-old female, who may be an ex-girlfriend or other relationship to the suspect.

Snyder said the Sheriff’s Office is concerned for the welfare of that woman.
