The Navy has announced a replacement Blue Angels F/A-18 pilot for the remainder of the performance season, including the Miramar Air Show in September.

Cmdr. Frank Weisser will rejoin the team, taking the place of late Marine Capt. Jeff Kuss. Kuss died June 2 when his jet crashed during a team practice in Tennessee.

Weisser previously flew as a Blue Angel from 2008 to 2010, working his way from narrator to opposing solo pilot and then lead solo pilot.

Upon his return, Weisser will fly as Blue Angel No. 6, the “opposing solo” pilot.

An Atlanta native, Weisser graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 2000 with a math degree. He earned his pilot’s wings in 2002 and has accumulated more than 4,000 flight hours and 400 tailhook landings on aircraft carriers.
