Aquarists need to realize that feeding a fish is not easy as tossing food into the tank and there is a right way to feed aquarium fish. Contents of fish food kept in a tin should be transferred into an airtight container as food is very susceptible to moisture. Although commercial fish food takes care of nutrient requirements of a fish, aquarists should give supplements through other types of foods. Most ornamental fish can sustain on processed food which is also available at the shops. Processed fish food which is available in the market is usually in the form of flakes or stakes.

Processed food can be selected depending on the type of aquarium fish including vegetarian, omnivorous and carnivorous. Aquarists should observe their fish some time before starting and some ornamental fish like gourami are bottom feeders. It is a good practice to feed ornamental fish once in a day and aquarium hobbyists can give a break of one day in between. If an aquarium fish is provided with rich food like blood worms, then it may get fatter posing dangerous health hazards. Overfeeding will result in fish with deformed bodies and there are lots of live fish foods available in the market.
