Perhaps everyone loves fast food given to their delightful taste and scrumptiousness. McD’s and KFC are two names that every child and adult swear by. No matter how much they are criticized for serving unhealthy food, people still throng McDonald’s and KFC outlets. And the best part is people don’t get bored with their limited menu options. In fact, sometimes people order the same menu for weeks and months as they cannot get over the lip-smacking taste of their favourite burgers and fries.
Establishment in India
In India, McD’s opened its first restaurant in 1996 at Basant Lok, New Delhi. As a token of respect to Indian culture, McDonald’s especially developed a menu without any beef or pork and with maximum vegetarian items to suit the Indian palate. After a commanding presence of 17 years, McD’s India has claimed itself a leader in the food retail space with a network of over 270 restaurants across the length and breadth of the country. McDonald’s is driven by the philosophy of Quality, Service, and Cleanliness & Value for Money. Keeping its promise, it provides its customers with high quality products, served promptly with a smile, in a clean and pleasant environment at an affordable price.
While KFC kept its feet in the Indian market in June 1995, in Bangalore. It was welcomed with protests from different authorities and campaigners. It was also charged of using illegally high amounts of monosodium glutamate (MSG) and frying its food in pork fat. Its second outlet was opened in Delhi, but was closed down due to health reasons. KFC abandoned the Indian market, however made a comeback in 1999 again in Bangalore. Till 2004, it was the only KFC outlet in India. As of now, KFC has 223 restaurants across 35 cities and by 2015; it is expected to have 500 restaurants across 75 cities.
Marketing and Branding
Of course, both McD’s and KFC have come out of their areas of speciality ie. Non-veg food to sustain their footprints in India. McD’s which is known for its Big Mac throughout the world, developed Chicken Maharaja Mac only for its Indian clientele. KFC which is out and out popular for its amazing chicken, is coming up with more and more vegetarian items to survive the tough competition given by McDonald’s in India. When we talk about advertising, McD’s seem to copy KFC commercials. McDonald’s, on the other hand, has been innovative in its expansion approach, with kiosks, drive-thrus, McDelivery and other such options. It opened its first only vegetarian restaurant in Amritsar, in 2012. And has plans to open another only vegetarian outlet at Vaishno Devi, the famous holy pilgrimage of Hindus.

Summary
To sum up, McD’s definitely leads the race with its presence in nook and corner of the country. Its delectable burgers are loved by each and every age group. Moreover, it has offered a vast range of vegetarian fast food which is preferred by people. Keeping in line with McD’s, KFC has also come a long way and made its mark in India. Its scrumptious chicken is the weakness of thousands of Indians. Both these fast food leaders have evolved much to please the customers with their veg and non-veg delicacies.
