“Concert for Kids” Kicks off 57th Monterey Jazz Festival Weekend September 18th
Monterey Jazz Festival kicks off the weekend’s activities this Thursday with another edition of the “Concert for Kids” at the Monterey County Fairgrounds, with Monterey Jazz Festival’s Next Generation Jazz Orchestra performing a free 45-minute set for students enrolled in Monterey County public schools. The concert will start at 11:15 a.m. sharp on Thursday, September 18 at the Garden Stage at the Monterey Fairgrounds. For details, go to http://www.montereyjazzfestival.org/tickets.
The pre-Festival “Concert for Kids” has been a tradition at the Monterey Jazz Festival for over 20 years, inviting students from Monterey County middle and high schools to the free event every year, with an estimated 500 students attending annually. The concert is part of an outreach effort by Monterey Jazz Festival to bring jazz music, for free, to the students of Monterey County.
Created as a part of Monterey Jazz Festival’s continuing commitment to jazz education, members of the Next Generation Jazz Orchestra were selected through an application and audition process during the Next Generation Jazz Festival each spring.
Twenty-one high school musicians from six states comprise the Next Generation Jazz Orchestra, including California, Florida, Michigan, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Washington State.
The Monterey Jazz Festival is the longest continuously-running jazz festival in the world.
Co-founded by Jimmy Lyons and Ralph J. Gleason in 1958, the nonprofit Monterey Jazz Festival has presented nearly every major artist in the world — from Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, Dave Brubeck, Tony Bennett, and Miles Davis, to contemporary masters Diana Krall, Wynton Marsalis, Trombone Shorty, Esperanza Spalding, and Terence Blanchard.

It is held annually on the 20-acre, oak-studded Monterey Fairgrounds, located at 2000 Fairground Road in Monterey, California. This has been the site of the Festival since its inception in 1958. The Arena (seen above) was also the site of the fabled 1967 Monterey Pop Festival, which was inspired by their organizers visiting the Jazz Festival in 1966. The Monterey Jazz Festival is an international icon and model for subsequent music festivals, including the Monterey Pop Festival, Woodstock, and many other multi-stage and nonprofit festivals across the world.
More than 500 top jazz artists perform throughout the weekend on 8 stages spread throughout the grounds.Nearly every major artist has performed at Monterey, with many memorable performances.
