Why did the media ignore Kailash Satyarthi?
October 10, 2014, 5:45 PM IST Kingshuk Nag in Masala Noodles | India | TOI

I have a confession to make. I had not heard of Kailash Satyarthi till the news broke about him being awarded the Nobel peace prize for 2014. I checked with many friends; none of them had any clue about who he was. All this is not a reflection on the Nobel committee but a commentary on people like us (PLU) who think that they are aware citizens but are ignorance personified. And the blame for this ignorance is on the media of the country, who are responsible directly and indirectly for holding a mirror on to happenings in the country. Of course, I am part of the media and therefore this is a reflection on my work too.
Kailash Satyarthi
As mediapersons we spend an inordinate amount of energy in concentrating on trivia, on leggy beauties and the rantings of the neta class and what we think is news. In the process, many real things, things that are meaningful and make a difference to our life, are all neglected. Kailash Satyarthi has spent a lifetime fighting against the practice of child labour, but for the mainstream media such matters hardly make news. Nor does child and women trafficking; nor does hunger or poverty. Well, to be correct, it does make news, but only sometimes and such news is relegated to the inside pages. The front pages are dominated by the discounts offered by Flipkart, Amazon, Snapdeal and their likes. Of course, the aspiring middle classes – men and women – are all excited about these deals and this is what we write about. After all, the papers are brought out by the aspirants – oops people who are aspirational, I mean.
Of course, no newspaper can be complete today without party pictures and of the rich and fashionable as they jostle to be seen at happening parties. In fact for many such page 3 personages their only claim to fame is that they are page 3, which means that they are recognized socialites. But what is a socialite? Well one who is recognized in social circles. And who is recognized in social circles? Anyone, who is frequently seen on page 3. But is it meaningful what they do? Nothing really, unless you think that to be featured on page 3 is all that there is to life! In this myopic world of have-nots posing as haves, is it strange that nobody has heard of Kailash Satyarthi?
As I write a (doctor) friend messages: Kailash Satyarthi stays at L6 Kalkaji (New Delhi). He used to stay at DDA Flats Kalkaji a few years ago. Yours truly was their family physician then.
Is it strange that newspapers don’t write about Satyarthi? After all Kalkaji is not happening. Who will read about people who stay in such non-happening places: because only inconsequential people could stay there. I am sure Satyarthi does not own a Bentley nor does he wear the costliest of watches and have costly accessories. So who will read about him?
But don’t blame the media alone. Has the government recognized Satyarthi for his efforts? By all accounts, no. Though I have no means of checking, I guess the government has not even conferred him with a Padma Shri, much less a Padma Bhushan. In fact beyond the NGO circles there may not be any awareness about the man who won the Noble prize and his work.
Many times I am called to meetings where readers ask why is the coverage in the media so one-sided? Why are meaningful things not covered? Why is there so much stress on sensationalism? Partly as a self-defence mechanism, I am quick to answer: a paper exists to satisfy its readers. We give our readers what they want. As readers you do not exercise your rights to ask for meaningful news, instead you love trivia and non- serious stuff. That’s why you get what you get. Most of the vociferous lot gets silenced by this answer and shut up. But some of them go on to ask: isn’t your duty as a mediaperson to be an educator and to provide a wholesome paper to us? I protest: can anybody say that we don’t provide a wholesome paper to you? Everything is covered in our paper – whether it is politics, human interest stories, technology and consumer trends, business and economy and even spiritualism. With this statement everybody falls silent.
As I write these lines, a colleague comes in and tells me about his previous organization, where there was a reporter who used to often quote Kailash Satyarthi and his Bachpaan bachao Andolan. He adds: but we banned the reporter from writing on this matter; we felt there was a surfeit of Satyarthi and his movement. Everybody was getting bored.
But can there be a surfeit of Satyarthis and the movements spawned by them? No, never. It is time that the media recognizes this. The reader also has a responsibility for ensuring that the media focuses on such meaningful matters. Otherwise there is no scope for progress of the country. And if the country does not progress, where is the chance for the individual citizens to progress? All you aspirational types, are you listening?

the primary concern of the media is its popularity. the newspapers want the circulation figures to skyrocket and the tv channels are forever concerned about the tpr ratings. each channel boasts it is the number one channel to garner max number of commercials. as for the news, any silly comments or actions by celebrities of cine actors, cricket players or politicians who are practically jokers will get them more viewers. a wardrobe malfunctioning of an actress will be better news than a hundred satyarthis. the media should do some introspection, reduce its goals for profits and concentrate on the society, its evils and attempt to correct them.

research revealed that people voted for a particular political party in the last elections who were more exposed to indian media. it shows how the media plays partisan politics, does not highlight the many shortcomings in indian society, totally ignores the needs of the downtrodden, is interested in catering to the interests of the already well-off middle class. in short, the indian media is status quoists. it is just happy with the returns it receives in the form revenues from advertisement. it is least bothered about playing an active role in ferreting out the filth in indian society or to play any role in ushering in revolutionary changes in the country to bridge the gap between the poor and the rich. it is so self-congratulatory about the negligible achievement our country makes like the mars orbiter mission. just a glance at the medals table in the last asian games reveals the kind of hollow system ours is. today the indian media is more concerned about ranbir-katrina relationship and the cleavage of deepika padukone. it is shame that we were unaware about satyarthi but not the europeans and the nobel prize committee.

you too are writing this because the name kailash satyarthi has attained the status of glamour/sensation now. but its heartening that you have recognized your mistake.to tell you frankly and explicitly, this nation or any nation or society does not run on news makers, news sellers or news readers. it runs due to the humble farmer, labourer, the house hold woman, who don’t listen to yoyo, or drop jaw at the poster of deepika padukone or fire crackers when india wins a game over pakistan, or go on a procession when modi or rahul wins an election, or wants to know what mukesh ambani says. the true music of life sustains on them. the page3 people just make noise, because they love making noise. they think the purpose of life is to make noise, clad in expensive suites, roaming in luxury cars. they are desperate for attention. this nation does not run on them. it runs on diligent toil, devoid of the need for attention. such people can feed others with the fruits of their toil. the page3 people are hungry themselves. how can they feed any one? where do they have the time to toil, relieving themselves from their born duty of feeding their hunger for attention? all they can do is exploit the humble ones. the humble ones don’t mind that too. they are ready for that too. they know that, if they have to exist, they have to feed their exploiters too. they have to let themselves be stolen, be deprived.so whether the media talks of kailash satyarthi or not, this nation will run, because he will toil without the requirement of any attention. because those who make this nation run are not the ones that make news, sell news or read news. they are the people who toil humbly. kailash satyarthi existed and did his work despite of media attention. he did his work humbly.it is an illusion that media is the pillar of democracy. no, toil is the pillar of life, irrespective of whether the toiler lives in a democracy or a dictatorship. he has to toil, and he is exploited, irrespective of whether he lives in a democracy or a dictatorship. he has to toil to sustain. he has to get exploited, to sustain. otherwise the page3 people will not let him live. they will device new ways of exploitation, so that they can keep themselves busy with making noise and not be trapped in the business of sustaining themselves. they sustain by exploiting the toilers. the page3 words like, democracy, rights, journalism are illusions. the only truely existing words are toil and exploitation.the toilers toil and be humble. the exploiters exploit and make noise. that is the true story of life. and you and your media is part of that noise making system. useful for nothing. the human society runs with you or without you. it has been running since times immemorial and will run for the future time. nothing has changed. toil and exploitation existed together then and exist now. all the talk of evolution, progress, development etc is page3 noise.

main stream media like toi have become rubbish…only to be sold to raddiwala without even reading. in mumbai bombay times is sheer waste for majority becuase it only to page 3 culture of film industry. actually they should ask subscriber if he foes not want bombay times then price is rs 3?even their eeb version should give readers which sections they want to read and rest should not download. there is one entry in toi which has remsined unaltered gor over 3 years and it is so irritating to read and note that none from toi has realized to delete it gor 3 years in his web vesrion. it is under section more…and says australia offers incentives to indian ….something like that….hope they improve

people can’t focus on the news that media don’t provide us. we don’t know what is happening out side of our circle of concern if media don’t provide the news to us. yah people don’t like news which is so called boring. but it is their duty to make ‘boring’ news interesting.

an excellent article to put a cover on responsibility of media………some body does not ask you a question, what is the primary function of media; is it a business house or social responsibility……..answers given by author reflects that he things journalism as a business and hence loses all rights of teaching moral lessons to society……bhai sidhi bhasha mein bole to….ganda hai par dhandha hai ye

the u.s. and the e.u. have been using the argument of child labour in india to further their protectionist agenda of blacklisting imports from the country. a blanket ban on the involvement of children at work is shortshighted and ignores the complex real causes. very often, the money earned by the child bridges the gap between starvation and survival for the entire family. also many traditonal skills of artisans and craftsmen are taught to children while they help at work. learning such skills is also an education. we could end up losing all our traditional crafts and skills if this agenda of a blanket ban on involvement of children at work is blindly implemented. the nobel peace prize has often had the hidden agenda of the western political and business establishment behind it.

why did the media ignore kailash satyarthi?a simple answer to this is – because all of the non-belabors who are a lot more in numbers than you people criticizing the media.i am a software professional and have no association with any of the media agencies and am myself a strong critique of the way media works these days especially the likes of arnab goswamis… however, this blog has made few strong statements and that too someone from the media itself (of which i am quite impressed). but the fact remains – what we want is what we get.we did not want to know about sir kailash satyarthi and therefore we did not get to heart of him.. i think its no more than that.. if we really wanted to know about people like him we would have certainly seen them in the media too..media gives us what we want.. its as simple as it is.. and it works just like any other business model.. did you think media houses are social agencies running for the pure benefits of the readers? they are just like any other corporate houses. their interests purely lies in making money by increasing the readership/viewership. and if they continue to do what they do then it is indicative of the fact that the viewers/readers are increasing by the work they do…so in the end its the viewers/readers who are to be blamed more than the media houses themselves…no matter how much we all criticize the media houses here, the people who take interest and increase the client base of the media houses out-number us by many folds.

i agree with the writer. i will also add this: though mr. satyarthiji has not been given any award by india government, he has won many awards in many countries. to name a few, 2009: defenders of democracy award (us)2008: alfonso comin international award (spain)2007: gold medal of the italian senate (2007)2007: recognized in the list of ‘heroes acting to end modern day slavery’ by the us state department2006: freedom award (us)2002: wallenberg medal, awarded by the university of michigan1999: friedrich ebert stiftung award (germany)1998: golden flag award (netherlands)1995: robert f. kennedy human rights award (us)1995: the trumpeter award (us)1994: the aachener international peace award (germany)but for the noble peace prize, his recognition would have not happened..!! this attitude of our media/people shows our `mental gulaami’ according to me. we only pay attention to a western big name/organisation. nothing lesser is not paid any heed.

we all human being consider ourselves different than other animals in this world. moreover media in the human society considers itself as the builder of next generations.my experience of indian media is not that of builder of society, forget of next generation. if any intellectual media person asks his children about what they think the life of future generations should be, i am sure they will be stunned.it is high time that indian media takes some time off and do some serious forward thinking as what should be the life of future generations – may be 5 to 10 generation ahead. they must go back in history and take some lessons as how how ancestors had futuristic thinking that has given us this quality of life.on one side oil is getting exhausted from the earth, on other side human acts are showing its effect on the environment and devastation it is causing in different parts of world.i appeal to all so called media for guide and initiate educate human society for the rights and wrongs and preserve future (forget building of future). they must share more and more positive events happening around the world

because corporates maphia is paying huge money to media to publish fafricated stories of modi to praise him. sun phara was one of the main sponspor along with adani, ambani and essar in madison square. though the indian media celebrated saying indians giving huge respect to modi in madison square. for the millions what the corporate spent for this huge event management the result are coming out. modi is giving free hands to pharmaceutical giants to loot indians for essential medicines. now cancer and othe deceases these companies can charge 30 times or 40 times for the medicine. what a good governance from modi and sangh parivar to loot indians. free hands to corporates for deciding the price of petrol, dielsel, gas , commmodities and everything. still sangh parivar mongers are saying modi is doing wonders. even the corrupted media with maphia coporates are praising modi.

indians are good at ignoring those under their own noses who do amazing work. only when they are noted by international bodies do we start going gaga in true bollywood fashion. pathetic. one great example is of dr dilip mahalanabis, who has saved millions of lives by inventing the oral rehydration solution for diarroea in the 1970s (with john hopkins), a simple treatment that indians failed to note.he continues to do his work silently in calcutta at the age of 80. check him out.

finally one journalist showed the courage of admitting the bitter truth. media in india always focused on cheap political and popular issues and not on real issues. time has come for media to postmortem their faults. media should not think that people of india is spineless and will accept blindly whatever they tells. people of india can give the same treatment as they gave to upa. modi already took initiative to make fb available to every remote places. that can be made a platform to start protesting against media.

media has never been independent in india and many parts of the world. if they need to survive they depend on politicos for hinder free running and corporates for the funds to publish. if any one of them does wrong how can media highlight it? the fight against child labour by kailash was actually against the system and systematic exploitation by the employers. employers of children are very powerful people such as in fireworks manufacturing, brick kilns, bangle making etc. they are a big mafia. most of them are in politics too at least at the local levels. even if a local news paper highlights these problems the publishers would get into trouble and that’s what the media wants to avoid. the electronic media is more worse. if it wants to sensationalize a issue it repeats the news 100 times in a matter of hours with big bang words. media has never been neutral, you can find them either on one of the sides. i hope they wake up at least now and look for the people who work for the welfare of the society silently and seek no personal glorification.

i too have a confession to make. as a commenter of considerable ‘seniority’ i have accumulated quite a few biases and distortions about some of the regular blog writers in the times. unfortunately mr. nag belonged to the ‘them’ side in contrast to the ‘us’. but his current blog-post is … unbelievably good, hyper-real and super-contextual to the times we live in. broadly, we are guilty of two things: 1) not singing the odes of real heroes. 2) printing ‘paid’ praises of undeserving zeroes. today the precious nuggets of human struggle – that our nation has in plenty – are buried in thankless sands, while the marketing-savvy, glib-talkers (be it sports icons or authors or politicians or anybody), carve their tortuous way to fame and riches (which is then split between the paid gods and their promoter poojaris). we as a nation need to value the wealth that lies hidden in these ordinary unsung heroes. for every shivaji in history, there are hundreds of mothers like hirkani who braved steep hillsides in blind love upon hearing the cries of their child. india needs to rediscover this wealth and restore it to its deserving glory.

all praise for media to unearth so many scams and consequently make public aware what is happening with their hard earned money. and people dethroned last govt for same. i am also proud of indian democracy where a sitting cm was sent to jail for misdeeds, though very late. however, it is a shame that media could not find space for mr. kailash satyarthi and noble committee reminded them hey you have a gem. and that’s where media and govt fall behind to celebrate real hero. and we, our children and younger generation end up where we could not find our role models, whereas there are may be plenty of noble men to be noticed and distinguished. nevertheless, every day is learning. i hope and wish media will stand up and find out every single noble man who deserves and celebrate. amen.

i know what i am writing is very rude. but this nobel for one is a silent but very very loud slap on indian media and indian government. yes, today i feel proud that i did know about bachpan bachao andolan and so i did not have to search but i also have to confess that i possibly did not bother to know more. so, may be just may be with this we the average indians would learn to recognise the real achievers, the real people who make a difference however, small. and for once we would forget the glamour of the actors and cricketers

at present what we hear , see and understand are all controlled by media accordingly as they are ordered either by some high profile political worker or by capitalist businessman. there is also a very important thing to notice that every person getting in touch with power or money, they are changing like shave shifters even tough belonging from a well educational background. surprisingly we have our hard working political leaders, who are cheating their own people daily for money and power. we also can see that media is changing their sides from one political party to another time to time. as we have freedom of speech in india our political leaders tell lies with out even bothering a bit.

no indian is worth anything unless a foreigner recognizes his or her worth – this is what the british did to india; the british made india and indians worth nothing. the british raj ate all the cherries of the colonial india – one by one. and now the american raj will do the same. the indians will remain divided – hindus, moslems, gujratis, maharastrisns, tamilians and the people of karnataka. gandhi and tagore understood the miseries of india well. people like modi has no understanding of what india is; they do not even know the mythology of india – they pretend that they know the mahabharata and the ramayana.

kingshuk nag’s honest analysis and confession as a journalist is appreciable, for his frank reflection of state of affairs of our journalism and government’s apathy towards social causes, while all the news focus more on sensationalism.government machineries also owe an answer to the people of india as to why such a name never figured prominently even in any discussions for a recognition of padma awards while hundreds of them are bestowed on many year after year? does this mean that india do not recognise or appreciate such contributions to society? this episode must make the powers that be including journalists, that over emphasise on self-publicity and being in competition to be the first to ‘breaking the news’ should not the only goal of competent journalism. quality of journalism should get equal focus if not more, besides commercial interests of circulation etc.venkatarajan

mr. nag, the unknown mr. kailash satyarthi getting a nobel prize is a slap on india’s face again – india is always incapable of recognizing her own talended people. i was familiar with the last name satyarthi, as someone with that name from bihar shared a room with me in the hostel of the national library in calcutta where i stayed for a month in 1985 for research. but, i never heard of this satyarthi. consider that even though india’s first nobel laureate was known to the educated people in bengal, the educated people in the rest of the country probably barely knew him until he was recognized by the nobel committee. this incapacity to recognize her own people stems, according to me, from the fact that generally, incapable people holding power run the country, and greedy newspapers like yours appear to be only interested in publishing sleazy, so called page 3. one does not see such sleazy coverage in the hindu. but, then, the hindu also did not help the country help recognize mr. satyarthi. any suggestion for a corrective action?

this news item is a true eye opener. many like me were not aware of mr kailash satyarthi, till he was awarded nobel peace prize for 2014. not our fault, true his efforts have gone unnoticed by media, govt. for one like him there are many crusaders who fight for social cause, and it forms the duty of local administration to identify such persons. yes our award system is full of hypocrisy. we award the same person padma shri to bharat ratna, as if it is some sort of graduation ceremony. things need to change. it will be no surprise if goi awards mr kailash satyarthi a bharat ratna directly. hope they do so!, otherwise we indians are shameless like our government.

i am also surprised by the name and had no knowledge of what was his accomplishment till date. i have no recollection of reading it in any media reports on any of his endeavors….i take pride in his achievements and he being awarded nobel prize. i do not want to take away the glory from him or india(myself included), but i have now very poor view about nobel prize on peace. i think it is highly politically motivated after they awarded obama for doing nothing but on hope that he might do something! it was a dud…specially after they royally ignored gandhi – mk! today i get a cynical feeling….till last year malala was too young and now a year after what changed? and why 2 people one from india and one from pakistan to be equated? is it really just a happy coincidence? looking at the politics of nobel i do not think so! anyways, congrats to stayarthi for doing a great service to humanity and making us all proud! congrats to malala for her courage and being voice of women in pakistan….great job guys….

i think you are wrong if you now have a very poor view about nobel prize on peace. many critics in the past commented about the probable highly politically motivated aspects of the nobel peace prize, but this has not been established ever. and, as they say in law, until proven guilty, one is innocent. in the case of the pakistani girl, she has been in the news (a darling of the western media) in the past couple of years, ever since she was shot in the head by the taliban. but, in the case of this indian gentleman, the indian and any indian state government, and the media totally failed to recognize his contribution that the nobel committee was able to recognize. now, of course, the indian and the mp state governments will recognize him. but, the lesson learnt is that, we have capable people with great minds, and we all, as ordinary citizens of the country, ought to recognize them for their contributions to the cause of the humanity.

yes we also never heard of ks, our own unsung hero. while the blame cannot be totally on media but major part of it must be attributed to them. they keep on repeating things from morning to evening , so much so that sometimes we joke, it would be a good idea to give these tv channels course books of school students and ask them to keep on repeatedly telecasting chapters from these books all day around. the children who are generally glued to tvs would soon learn many things from such media blitzkrieg. but they never could assign even ten minutes of time to such unsung heroes. i am sure kailash styarthi story may not be the sole story which has been skipped by the media houses , there would be plenty of them. media houses should sit down and decide to assign at least one hour every day to telecast stories from such social activists and ngos. they need such a support from them. they as such operate on shoe string budget , and such a coverage would help spread the news and awareness and their cause.
