It could well be really embarrassing if you ever got those Trivial Pursuit questions cycling wrong in this Olympic year, so here??��s an instant reminder!

Small beginnings

In 2012, Britain is eyeing a gold medal for Mark Cavendish within the men??��s road race, which are contested over 130 kilometres. The initial ever cycling event for the Olympic Games in Athens in 1896 was more than a distance of 87 kilometres and Edward Battell won bronze for Britain on that occasion. Incidentally, Britain has won 18 gold medals in Olympic cycling events.

South African performances

Rudolph ??Okey??�� Lewis was the winner on the first official Olympic road race at Stockholm in 1912, where he beat several European greats, who was clueless that who he was. He subsequently left for Germany, where he raced professionally around the track and amassed a considerable fortune.

The most successful Summer Olympics ever for South African cycling was Helsinki in 1952 where Raymond Robinson and Tommy Shardelow won silver from the Men??��s 2 000-metre track tandem event another group of silver medals joined George Estman, Robbie Fowler,cycling clothing, Tommy Shardelow and Alfred (Jimmy) Swift inside 4 000-metre team pursuit. Raymond Robinson also won a bronze medal during the men??��s one-kilometre time trial.
