Walter Copan, TAEUS President

Dr. Walter G. Copan, an internationally recognized leader in intellectual property and technology-based innovation, has been named president of TAEUS International Corporation, effective May 1, 2013. In this role, Dr. Copan will develop and implement the company’s growth strategy, drive entry into new markets, and oversee corporate operations.

Prior to joining TAEUS, Dr. Copan served as Managing Director, Technology Commercialization and Partnerships, at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Brookhaven National Laboratory from 2010 to 2013. Among his accomplishments were leading the implementation of the new DOE technology transfer mechanism, “Agreements for Commercializing Technology” (ACT); leadership of the “Startup America” initiative on behalf of DOE for entrepreneurial business creation; initiating DOE’s Small Business Innovation Research – Technology Transfer program; and leading economic development.

After earning dual B.S./B.A. degrees in chemistry and music from Case Western Reserve University, Dr. Copan began his career in chemicals and materials research at Lubrizol Corporation in 1975. He earned a Ph.D. in physical chemistry from Case Western in 1982, and subsequently held management positions at Lubrizol in research and development, strategy, new ventures, and business unit leadership in the U.S. and abroad, including Managing Director, Technology Transfer and Licensing, from 1999-2003. In 2003, he joined DOE’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory as Principal Licensing Executive, Technology Transfer. In 2005, Dr. Copan moved to Clean Diesel Technologies, Inc., an international technology developer and licensing firm, where he was Executive Vice President and CTO, spearheading the company’s transformation, growth and subsequent listing on NASDAQ.

Dr. Copan has authored numerous professional publications and presentations, and serves on the boards of several organizations. He is an active member of the Licensing Executives Society (LES) USA and Canada, where he recently served as Regional Vice President for the USA, and a leader in LES International. He also served as a member of the National Advisory Council to the U.S. Federal Laboratory Consortium, and has contributed to United Nations and World Intellectual Property Organization programs as an expert on energy and technology transfer matters. Case Western Reserve University named Dr. Copan their Distinguished Alumnus of the Year in 2008. Other professional affiliations include the American Chemical Society, the Association of University Technology Managers, and the Industrial Research Institute.
