2016-01-04

CES 2016 kicks off in just a few days and we’re headed to the show.

For those of you looking to touch base, we will be represented by Jonathan Feist, Nirave Gondhia and our owners as a part of our larger global network under the Android Authority banner. Android Authority is headed to CES in full force, including team members from our sister site SoundGuys.

CES is usually a pre-cursor to the tech we can expect to see on store shelves in the coming years, and has been the launching point for more than one great mobile device over the years. Last year brought us LG’s G Flex 2 among others. This year has some exciting Google news, and we’ll be sure to bring you all the best tablets that make it to the show. Here are a few of the great things we are looking forward to this year in Las Vegas.

Huawei at CES 2016

Huawei has had a hard time cracking into the U.S. market with their flagship devices, this appears poised to change in 2016. Huawei has been dripping hints that CES will play host to a few new announcements from the Chinese company, primary of which will be a look at the Mate 8, and possible release of at least three phones into the U.S. market. We’re hoping to see the Honor 5x, Honor 6 Plus and the Honor 7.

Samsung at CES 2016

Truth told, we are not expecting to see any new tablets from Samsung at CES this year, they usually use this event for smart appliances and television. For Samsung, as with most of the big manufacturers around the globe, Mobile World Congress (MWC) in March is the usual home for mobile device announcements. That said, we are expecting to see Samsung’s new camera tech, called BRITECELL.

Sony at CES

As previously mentioned, MWC is a typical shining moment for manufacturers like Sony, but we cannot count out that we may get to see a rough draft of a new Xperia tablet. While that may just be a dream, we are certain we will see new televisions, including Android TV and some PlayStation gaming.

LG at CES 2016

Saving the big stuff for MWC, like a new flagship in the LG G5, we are sadly not expecting to see the release of a LG G Flex 3 at CES this year. Aside from this, we are expecting to see plenty of audio, accessories, TV and smart appliances from LG, and we are not giving up on the hope for a few new low to mid-range phones and tablets.

ASUS at CES 2017

Last year, ASUS all but stole the show at CES with their new ZenFone 2 Android powered phone. The announcement event was worth a look as well, if you’re into that sort of thing. Once again, we are not actively expecting new mobile tech from ASUS this year, but a new smartphone is not out of the realm of possibility and we always have high hopes for a new tablet from the company that brought us the Nexus 7.

Virtual Reality at CES 2016

If nothing else comes of our time at CES this year, VR should prove impressive. Let’s just name a few of the players that will be at the show: Sony, Oculus, Samsung, HTC, IonVR and CastVR should prove a good start. There is little to say now, but from Google’s Glass and Cardboard projects, all the way up to full on gaming VR rigs, VR is set to be big at CES 2016.

Qualcomm, NVIDIA and Intel at CES 2016

We sometimes take for granted that each of our computing devices has equipped a computer processor. Manufacturers such as Intel, Qualcomm and NVIDA have been hard at work keeping players and processors like Samsung’s Exynos, MediaTek, Huawei’s Kirin and more from stealing the market. We are hoping to see dev units running the latest SnapDragon 820 chipset and would live to see more tablets running the NVIDIA Tegra X1 processor. Google’s Pixel C is a good start, let’s get some more!

Wearables and Automotive at CES 2016

Although the standard smartwatch may not be making news as much as they had been a year ago, we are expecting to see plenty more smartwatches at CES this year. Beyond the watch, we are expecting to see many other wearable approaches, smart clothes, shoes and more plus plenty of fitness tracking wearables should prove entertaining, if not life changing. Your car is also on deck for some built-in computing, with Ford rumored to have a partnership in the works with Google for self-driving cars and BlackBerry set to take on Android Auto.

Lenovo and Tango at CES 2016

We saved one of the best for last, Google and Lenovo have announced that they have an announcement coming at CES this week, centered around Project Tango. We are not sure yet if we are about to see a public launch of a Tango powered Lenovo tablet, or if this is just a partnership announcement, either way, we’ll be paying close attention to the augmented reality project with, we’ve got more than a few ideas on how full 3D mapping technology can be put to use for professional and personal use.

See you from the show

As you might imaging, the week long event that is CES will have plenty more to see than just the tidbits we’ve discussed above. Pre-briefings and press conferences are already under way and we are excited to be on the show floor when the public convention opens up on the 6th through the 9th.

If you are in the neighborhood, be sure to stop by the Android Authority press booth to say hello, and if you cannot make it, don’t worry, if it has to do with tablets, it is our mission to share the info. Stay tuned.
