January, 2015

2015 promises to be a big year in the hotel world. With the return of the Ritz and the Crillon in Paris, Morgans setting up shop in Istanbul and returning to London, and the advent of Virgin Hotels — to say nothing of the countless gems that are in soft opening in every corner of the globe — it’s not easy to narrow it down. Nevertheless, we did it: here are 15 hotels from which we expect great things in ’15.

(For our U.S. list, click here.)

1.

Mondrian London

LONDON, ENGLAND — On the south bank of the Thames in the famous Sea Containers building, the Mondrian London is the first Morgans establishment to open in the British capital in over a decade: a (stationary) luxury cruise designed by Tom Dixon, who promises a glamorous journey…

2.

Le Cinq Codet

PARIS, FRANCE — We’ve seen more than a few Parisian hotels that are steeped in local history. Few distill so masterfully the essence of an era. Housed in a Thirties building near Invalides, Le Cinq Codet was entrusted to the designer Jean-Philippe Nuel, with chic Zen-inspired results…

3.

Urso Hotel & Spa

MADRID, SPAIN — Making its home in a century-old neoclassical palace, between the embassies Chamberi and the hip bars of Chueca, URSO returns a bit of marble-clad elegance to the Madrid hospitality scene. Its designer is Antonio Obrador, the author of the Cap Rocat in Majorca…

4.

Hotel Zoo

BERLIN, GERMANY — In Berlin, the most prestigious spaces are renovations — starting from scratch is simply not done. Any hotelier would dream, for example, to work with raw materials like the Hotel Zoo: a 19th-century building which became a luxury hotel in 1911, brought back to life in the present by Dayna Lee and Ted Berner…

5.

Portrait Firenze

FLORENCE, ITALY — Each one of Salvatore Ferragamo’s boutique hotels is faultlessly stylish and luxe, as comfortable and as perfectly sculpted as a pair of the house’s famous leather moccasins. If you’ve been fortunate enough to stay in one, you already know…

6.

10 Karakoy

ISTANBUL, TURKEY — In 2014, the Morgans group’s international ambitions reached outside the comfort zone — New York, Londres, Miami, Los Angeles — with this very stylish, very contemporary boutique hotel, opened in the terra incognita of Istanbul’s Karaköy district…

7.

The Norman

TEL AVIV, ISRAEL — The Norman isn’t the first Twenties mansion to be converted into a chic boutique hotel near Rothschild Boulevard, in the vibrant heart of Tel Aviv’s White City. So what sets this one apart? Does the phrase “rooftop infinity pool” ring any bells?

8.

Sunborn Gibraltar

GIBRALTAR, UK — If the Mondrian London feels like a moored cruise ship, Sunborn goes one further — it actually is a super-yacht, permanently parked in Gibraltar’s marina. Take it easy in the Sapphire Bar lest you find yourself tempted to take this vessel for a spin…

9.

Hôtel des Galeries

BRUSSELS, BELGIUM — This one is a “love boutique,” opened by the Flammarion family in one of the most charming places in Brussels, the Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert shopping arcade, with its two hundred meters of famous canopy. A cozy little nest for tourists on a spree in the capital of Europe…

10.

Hotel Mas Lazuli

CATALONIA, SPAIN — There’s more to Catalonia than just Barcelona. There’s also Girona and Figueras, historic towns, and ancient Roman fortifications. Above all, at the northern end of the Costa Brava, there’s also the Mas Lazuli, a sumptuous 17-room boutique hotel housed in an 11th-century convent…

11.

Hotel Sahrai

FES, MOROCCO — The proprietors of the famous Riad Fès, situated in the immense medieval medina of Fès el Bali, have just opened a second hotel that’s every bit as magical: a high-end boutique hotel in a style somewhere between modern and classic Moorish, quietly perched on a hillside overlooking the ancient enclosure…

12.

Sublime Comporta

ALENTEJO, PORTUGAL — The name just about says it all. Le Sublime Comporta is a dream hotel, its fourteen rooms and suites like something out of the pages of a design magazine, but surrounded by pine trees, and close by to a classic beach town along the lines of Ibiza or José Ignacio. All this, just an hour from Lisbon…

Casasur Bellini Hotel

BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA — Newly opened in the verdant Palermo Botanico, near the Museo Evita and the botanical gardens, CasaSur Bellini is the little sister to the CasaSur Art Hotel in Recoleta. It’s a clever child, too, equipped with a pool that’s quite agreeable during the hot hours of this southern summer…

Click Clack Hotel

BOGOTA, COLOMBIA — A few streets over from the Parque de la 93, the Click Clack Hotel packs its neighborhood’s most hedonistic elements into eleven hyper-modern floors: fine dining, vibrant nightlife, a beautiful fashion-industry clientele, and a rooftop burger bar to boot…

Rosewood Beijing

BEIJING, CHINA — We finish on a perfectly executed business hotel, packed with the proper dose of local charm, and conceived around two elements: a collection of artworks and decorative elements from China’s past — from gongbi painting to shui-mo inks — and immense suites recalling nothing more than home sweet home…
