There’s something about the best luxury hotels that just seems to unleash our inner spendthrift. Sometimes that means tearing open that $10 bag of M&Ms or going a little overboard with the room service, but when the spirit of consumerism really takes hold, it means filling our bags nearly to bursting with stuff we just can’t live without. From Fifth Avenue in New York to the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, these hotels make it all too easy to go on a serious shopping spree — in some cases without even leaving the room.

1.

The Dylan Amsterdam

Amsterdam — Located in the heart of Amsterdam’s 9 Streets shopping district, the Dylan is surrounded by some of the city’s best high-end boutiques. For those who want to buy some clothes without bothering to put any on, however, the hotel also offers in-room shopping, with access to the 9streetsonline inventory via the web-enabled television. And if you don’t like your purchase, you just leave it at the hotel’s front desk to return it for a refund.

The Quin

New York — For an indication of the quality of the shopping at the Quin, just consider the names of the neighbors: Bergdorf Goodman, Harry Winston, Jimmy Choo…. We could go on and on. After all, this is more or less the bull’s-eye center of Manhattan, with the best of Fifth Avenue’s shopping just a block away. Closer still, there’s a tempting Bergdorf Goodman–curated vitrine in the hotel lobby, as well as a menu of luxury goods (also curated by Bergdorf) that you can order from the room.

The Mark Hotel

New York — Apparently Bergdorf is in bed with more than one New York luxury hotel. At the Mark, the concierge has a private line to the department store’s director of personal shopping, who knows as well as anyone how to take good care of a demanding clientele. Anything you purchase is promptly delivered to the room via messenger service, though if you do decide to head out and do some shopping for yourself, you’ll hardly be hurting for places to part with your cash.

Armani Hotel Dubai

Dubai — Is it any surprise that a Dubai hotel by one of the world’s finest luxury brands offers some serious opportunities for conspicuous spending? Dubai is where the world lets its consumerist id run wild, and nowhere more so than in the Burj Khalifa, home to both the Armani Hotel and the gigantic Dubai Mall. At the hotel, the Armani Galleria sells some of Armani’s most rarefied haute couture fashion accessories: Privé collection pieces usually available only upon invitation.

Éclat Beijing

Beijing — The futuristic Éclat Beijing is located in the city’s new Parkview Green development, home to shops from the likes of Stella McCartney, Ted Baker and Agent Provocateur — not to mention a Tesla dealership, should you wish to make a $100,000 impulse buy. What really sets the shopping here apart, however, is the hotel’s outstanding contemporary art gallery, whose works can be purchased with the help of a specialized team of art experts.

The Marylebone Hotel

London — London more or less invented shopping as we know it today, and for full immersion in the local shopping culture, the Marylebone has a prime location. It’s surrounded by independent boutiques, but also within easy striking distance of Oxford and Bond Streets, home ot some of the world’s best shopping. This is about as close as you can get to sleeping in Selfridge’s without stowing away in the department store’s home furnishings section.

SLS Hotel at Beverly Hills

Beverly Hills — With Rodeo Drive a couple of miles away and the hotel’s BMW house car ready to cart you there, the SLS is well positioned for a classic L.A. shopping experience. For something more unique, however, there’s Regalo at SLS. Designed by Philippe Starck and spanning some 2,500 square feet, it’s almost museum-like in its look and feel — the difference being that you can take the wares home, including products from Kiki de Montparnasse and jewelry by Monica Castiglioni.

The Peninsula Hong Kong

Hong Kong — The original Peninsula is one of the great classic luxury hotels of the world, with a classic shopping experience to match. Established in the Forties, the hotel’s shopping arcade is home to some eighty high-end shops. Name a luxury brand — from Baccarat to Bulgari, Cartier to Chanel — and it’s almost surely here. And if you can’t find it on site, Kowloon’s second-best shopping is just outside on Nathan Road’s “Golden Mile.”

Radisson Blu Le Dokhan’s Hôtel

Paris — Le Dokhan’s offers easy access to some of the city’s best shopping, but more than that, it provides some serious inspiration. The hotel is a menagerie of antiques and objets d’art, with clever touches such as an elevator upholstered in vintage Louis Vuitton luggage trunks. You can find your couture if you want it, but the concierge is also well-versed in the city’s more offbeat shopping options, from the labyrinthine flea markets to the finest antique shops.

La Mamounia Marrakech

Marrakech — Set in the center of Marrakech’s warren-like medina, La Mamounia is just steps away from an overwhelming array of boutiques hawking everything from cinnamon to silk to silver. Meanwhile, inside is the Shop Mamounia, a tranquil, eminently browsable retail shop dedicated to La Mamounia products, including bags by Barbara Rihl and perfumes by the famous Maison Fragonard, as well as olive oil and marmalade made from fruit from the hotel’s own gardens.
