As I’m sure you all know, rice is a staple in our household, just like pasta. We typically cook rice about three times a week and I use it in a plethora of recipes.
Growing up, our rice cooker was always on the counter and my mom would use it every night. At a very young age, she taught me how to wash and cook rice. Most nights during the week, that would be my “chore” when I got home from school. I would have to measure out the rice, wash it, then put it in the rice cooker to cook so it would be ready by the time my parents got home from work. It’d just be one less thing my mom would have to do after a long day at work.
There are so many brands of rice cookers out there and it’s always really hard to figure out which one is the best one. Coming from an Asian background, everyone had high praises of the brand Zojirushi. All our friends would be like, “the elephant Z-brand is the best!” It was kind of a known brand amongst Asian friends and family and mostly everyone I knew (including our family) had a Zojirushi. I really truly believe having a great rice cooker is what leads to having great rice.
I’m very picky about my rice. It has to be fluffy and soft. I hate hard rice or rice that is undercooked. Some rice cookers I’ve experienced in college really made me say to myself, “when I buy a rice cooker for myself after graduation, it has to be a Zojirushi or equivalent.” It’s true when they say all rice cookers aren’t made the same. It’s really worth the splurge. My parents have always had a Zojirushi and it was the simple kind, the one where you just pressed down the cook button and it cooked. I never did more research on what other styles or functions other Zojirushi rice cookers had until Zojirushi contacted me and asked me to review their newest rice cooker, the Zojirushi Micom Rice Cooker.
Micom stands for micro computer and the little chip automatically adjusts the cooking temperature and time for your rice so you can have flawless results. I love the digital aspect of this rice cooker – it’s got really BIG and clear buttons so you know what you’re pressing and the LCD screen is nice and big, too. It comes with a steam basket, so you can choose to use the rice cooker as a steamer! I must say one of my favorite settings of this rice cooker is the brown rice setting. We all know brown rice is healthier but it also takes a lot longer to cook. I can never get the timing right and it always comes out undercooked. This rice cooker takes the guess work out of that and you just have to choose “brown rice” and the micom automatically adjusts the cooking temperature and time so you’ll have perfectly cooked brown rice every single time! Another favorite feature of mine is the handle on this rice cooker. I’ve had rice cookers where you would have to grab the entire body to move it around on the counter top – kind of bulky and heavy to shift around – the handle on this Zojirushi is great. If you can lift up a shopping bag, you can lift up this rice cooker and move it around with ease.
