The world’s newest declared nation wants to become its foremost tax haven. Libertarian politician Vít Jedlička, a Prague native, has declared a 2.7 square mile piece of land along the Danube River, between Serbia and Croatia, to be “Liberland.”
Jedlička says that neither neighboring nation claimed the territory when they established their boundaries following the break-up of Yugoslavia. He says that international law allows for his claim. The undeveloped land is larger than Monaco, which is less than a square mile.
The new nation will have no taxes, and will instead rely on business investment to fund the limited government. Not surprisingly, over 260,000 people have applied for citizenship through its website.
Liberland’s motto is “Live and Let Live”; and per an official statement, “The objective of the founders of the new state is to build a country where honest people can prosper without being oppressed by governments making their lives unpleasant through the burden of unnecessary restrictions and taxes.”
The founders have already drafted a proposed constitution, whose preamble closely mirrors that of the United States.

Jedlička told Fox News, “We really felt restricted. We really felt under pressure. We really feel that Europe needs another tax haven. We need a place where people can prosper.”

He currently serves as president of one of the Czech Republic’s northern districts, but opponents have told him that “You should have your own state to prove your ideas of liberty.”
Jedlička decided to do just that and began researching land classified as terra nullius (“no man’s land.”) He found Liberland.
Neither Serbia nor Croatia will allow journalists to enter the fledgling country from their territories. The Croatian consulate in New York told Fox News, “We do not consider them to be a nation. We consider them to be virtual trespassers and we do not take their claims very seriously.”
Regardless, Jedlička is moving forward and says he already has commitments from investors.

“We believe we can set up the last state on the planet. We are taking the best parts of the American Revolution and the U.S. Constitution and applying it here,” he said.
