Celebrating the importance of reading as a daily activity, South Grove Elementary School kicked off its annual Parents as Reading Partners program on March 3 with a special assembly, which incorporated this year’s theme “It’s a Book Fair Fiesta.” Students were treated to an original folk story, “The Runaway Taco,” which is based off “The Runaway Tortilla” by Eric A. Kimmel. Each grade level took on the role of a specific animal in the interactive story, including a sheep for kindergarten, a snake for first grade, a frog for second grade, a jaguar for third grade, a donkey for fourth grade and a wolf for fifth grade.

PARP requires that students read for at least 20 minutes, five nights a week with a parent or grownup throughout the entire month of March. During the program, students are encouraged to read a variety of different books based on daily themes. At the conclusion of PARP, students will hand in their completed PARP calendars and one winner from each grade level will be selected for a special prize.
