If we picked up anything from the Fall 2016 runways, it’s that we need to kick our coat game up a notch. From huge, colour blocked coats, to dramatic fur jackets and daring dusters, the ‘big and bold’ coat is an essential buy for Winter 2016.
When we think of leopard print and draped fur coats, all our favourite old-school ‘it girls’ come to mind (think Marilyn Monroe, Barbara Streisand and Anne Bancroft in The Graduate). And while their glamorous style has made this trend a true classic, it’s the next generation of fashion ‘it-girls’ that have brought it back to life. Top models, celebrities and fashion editors have been stepping out bearing big, bold and colourful coats, including Gigi Hadid, Olivia Palermo, Selena Gomez, Sienna Miller and pretty much every member of the Kardashian/Jenner clan. Even the queen of fashion herself – US Vogue editor-in-chief, Anna Wintour, has been spotted sporting this daring trend.

If you’re not sure where to start with this trend, try going for just one solid bright colour. This is your one chance to wear your actual favourite colour or to bust out of that black or grey zone you've been in. If you’re not sure, think of the colour you’d pick if someone were to offer you a sticker or a straw – that’s your new coat colour!
Coats with dramatic details, embellishments and embroidery are another great way to get on board with this trend. Go for a long or oversized style, decorated with beads, sequins, fringing, pom poms or just some extra cool stitching.
This is one of our favourite ways to go big and bold with our coats this season. There’s something so glamorous and high-class about a huge fur coat. Complete the look with a pair of wax coated skinnies and patent leather boots.
Typically, colour blocking happens in the warmer months… not this season! Coats with sharp, contrasting blocks of colour are guaranteed to make a statement and earn you some serious style credentials.
