September marks a sad month for everyone’s preferred streaming service. The service has decided not to renew its agreement with Epix, another service that allows Netflix to stream big, newer movies like World War Z and The Hunger Games. Hulu is instead going to pick up that deal and will start streaming big new movies, which is awesome for Hulu — a very good service that deserves more recognition.
Why? Well, it’s just incredibly difficult and expensive for Netflix to get newer movies to the service in a timely way. Studios would much rather have you rent newer movies rather than watch them on Netflix. In 2016, Disney’s deal with Netflix kicks in and you should see newer Marvel, Pixar and other Disney movies on the service a couple months after they’re in theaters. Disney dropped its deal with Starz and chose Netflix instead, so that’s how that’ll work. In the meantime, Netflix is talking up their original movies and documentaries, so there’s that.
It’s important to note that Netflix has plenty of new movies joining the service, but they’re not the big, popular mainstream stuff.
