Southwestern Christian University’s Rotaract Club is joining forces with the both the Southside and Northwest Rotary Clubs to raise money for the Children’s Center of Bethany with a pancake breakfast. The fund raising event is scheduled for Saturday, April 5 from 8 to 10 a.m. in the SCU Cafeteria.
The SCU Rotaract Club is selling tickets in advance for $5. They can be purchased for $7 at the door.
SCU’s Rotaract Club is in its second-year of existence and is under the advisement of Dr. Elicia Brannon-Little, business professor at SCU. The student-leadership is President Tori Wallar of Dallas, Texas; Vice President Duncan Wade from Oklahoma City, and Secretary Kim Hayes of Norman. Currently, the club has around 15 students that are active in the service, leadership and community service organization for young men and women between the ages 18–30.
Rotaract focuses on the development of young adults as leaders in their communities and workplaces. Clubs around the world also take part in international service projects, in a global effort to bring peace and international understanding to the world.
Rotaract originally began as a Rotary International youth program in 1968 at Charlotte North Rotary Club in Charlotte, N.C. It has grown into a major Rotary-sponsored organization of over 9,539 clubs spread around the world and 219,397 members.
The SCU club hold formal meetings, usually every two weeks, which feature speakers, special outings, social activities, discussions or visits to other clubs. Club members get together on designated days for service project work, social events, or professional/leadership development workshops.
The purpose of Rotaract is to provide an opportunity for young men and women to enhance the knowledge and skills that will assist them in personal development, to address the physical and social needs of their communities, and to promote better relations between all people worldwide through a framework of friendship and service.
Service projects like the April 5 Pancake Breakfast benefit the Children’s Center in Bethany. The Children’s Center is a private, nonprofit pediatric hospital serving children with complex medical and physical disabilities in Bethany, Oklahoma, in the Oklahoma City metropolitan area.
