Meat inspection Is Lively Issue In Lassen County
August 26, 1934

The city council which meets tomorrow night is expected to take definite action on the question of meat inspection. Under state law, it is compulsory for a county having a population of 27,000 or more to have government meat inspection but as residents of Lassen county do not reach this number it has not been forced to submit to this formality.

The board of supervisors and the county farm bureau are also scheduled to meet tomorrow to discuss the situation.

Several months ago the council passed an ordinance making the inspection compulsory but rescinded it later when a group of ranchers opposed the motion.

Meat dealers now claim that cheaper grades of meat are being shipped here from other parts of the state where the inspection law will not allow them to be sold and also that they are being forced to import higher grades of meat because there customers demand government inspected meat. This is resulting in a great drop in the local market, according to the butchers.
