Jack Edward Burk
Jack Edward Burk, 73, of Susanville, California passed away on January 29, 2015 in Reno, Nevada. He was born on February 15, 1941 to Ernest and Dorothy Burk in Nubieber, California. He was raised in Anderson, California, where he attended middle school and graduated from Anderson High School in 1958. He attended Shasta College, where he studied Criminal Justice.
Jack dedicated his professional life to public service. He was hired as a dispatcher by the Anderson Police Department in 1959 and became a police officer in 1962. Before leaving the Anderson PO in 1967, he advanced to the ranks of Sergeant and Lieutenant.
In 1967, Jack and his family moved to Susanville, where he worked for the Susanville Police Department for 28 years. He was hired as a patrol officer and worked his way through the ranks to sergeant, lieutenant and Chief of Police before retiring in 1995. In 1980, he was named the Susanville Police Officer of the Year. He served as an NRA Police Firearms Instructor at both departments.
Jack was an avid outdoorsman. He served as an NRA Hunter Safety instructor, was a member of the Westwood Rifle and Pistol Club, Oregon Knife Collectors’ Association, National Knife Collectors’ Association, Boone Society, Abraham Lincoln Association, and was a lifetime member of the NRA.
Jack enjoyed spending time with his family. He celebrated his 50th wedding anniversary in September 2014 and visited Washington D.C. with his wife, daughter and son-in-law in October 2014. He enjoyed photography and was a freelance photographer in his youth.
Jack is survived by his wife Sally, brothers Ray and Hal, son Andy, daughters Kate Clegg (Darrin) and Dorothy Bond (Benjamin), and grandchildren Kaitlyn, Savana and Warren. Jack was preceded in death by his father and mother and by his brothers , Don and Roy.
Services will be held on Friday, February 13 at 11:00 a.m. at Community Church in Susanville. The family requests that donations in Jack’s name be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675, or to the church or charity of your choice.
