Once you are affected by bed bugs, it is tough to get rid of the problem quickly. 1 in 5 Americans has reported a bed bug infestation or know someone who has encountered this issue.

Nature of bed bugs

They hide during the day and come out only during the night time. When the bed bugs bite, they inject an anesthetic agent so that the host cannot feel the bite. These bugs can survive in freezing temperature and heat of over 50 degrees. They reproduce quickly; a single bug can lay up to 5 eggs a day and a 500 in a lifetime.

How can you recognize them?

Bed bugs are usually brown in color, and when they are nourished with blood, their color ranges from red to dark brown. They are oval shaped pests and are generally in the size of an apple seed, ranging from 4-7mm in length. Bed bugs move at the speed of an ant, and they live up to 5-6 months. When they are in a dormant state, they can even survive for more than a year.

How do they spread?

If the infestation is severe, they will quickly spread to other rooms as well. They are visible to the naked eye and often hide in cracks and crevices. They live in furniture, clothing and beds so that they and their eggs can be present on used items. Bugs are also present in boxes, suitcases or any items that may be moved from traveling to home or a hotel to home. They also live in clothes, so if a person wears the same clothes unknowingly, the infestation will spread.
