Busiest Winter Since 2008

Sun Peaks, BC - With one weekend left in the ski season, Sun Peaks is celebrating a seven per cent increase in winter occupancy compared to the 2011-12 winter season.
“It has been the best winter since the 2008 global economic crisis,” says Christopher Nicolson, President of Tourism Sun Peaks. “We are encouraged by the significant growth this winter and especially by the increased awareness levels in our key markets.”
2012-13 skier visits are already ahead of last season with another busy weekend ahead.
“Its not only been a great snow year,” says Anne Haight, Director of Sales and Marketing for Sun Peaks Resort Corporation. “Its been a great year for people to get out and enjoy it. We've seen a high number of return and first time guests.”
Beginning with a strong increase over the Christmas and New Year’s period, the season carried on with the first B.C. Family Day Weekend in February having a significant impact and the month of March ending 22 per cent over 2012.
Tod Mountain Days kicks off on Saturday to mark the last weekend of winter operations. In preparation for the Dummy Downhill, teams create “dummies” on skis to fly down a ramp and explode upon impact. Points are awarded for originality and style, as well as level of destruction. The event begins on Saturday at 12:30 pm slopeside of the Village Day Lodge.
On Sunday, a spectator favourite called the Slush Cup will take place at 12:30 pm. Participants will attempt to ski or board across a chilly pond at the base of the mountain. Costumes are encouraged, with points awarded for effort, style and overall crowd appeal. After competing, contestants warm up in a slopeside hot tub provided by Sun Peaks Aquatics.
A Sun Peaks tradition evolved into a fundraising event, the Top to Bottoms Race marks the last run of the season for many. Participants meet at Top of the World at 3:30 pm on Sunday and race down the designated course to Bottom’s Bar and Grill with the first person to ring to the bell declared the winner. Participants must be 19 years of age or over and provide a $20 donation to the Sun Peaks Education Society.
