If you are a book lover like I am, then these ways to organize your books collection are going to help you keep track of what you have to read. Organized books make for a happy reader! If you’re a bargain book hoarder, these tips are for you.

How To Organize Your Book Collection

Use a book organizer software. There are some book organizer software products that are perfect for logging your books. While this isn’t necessarily a way to have organized books on a shelf, it is a method of being able to quickly and easily access what titles you already own. For someone like myself who tends to grab books on sale for future reading, it can prevent you from making a duplicate purchase. Check with your favorite book store or on your smart phone to help keep your books in order.

Sort alphabetically by author. While you already know how to organize shelves of books by size, you also want to consider things like how can you go quickly to find the book you are interested in. One of the best and most popular ways to have organized books is to sort alphabetically by author. Wherever the “beginning” of your collection is, you can work your way through authors whose last names begin with A down to Z. As you organize by author name, you can then alphabetize by title name accordingly. If a series of books should be numbered numerically within a collection with varied titles you can place those at the beginning of that author’s collection in the order the series goes.

Sort alphabetically by genre and then author. An alternate method of keeping organized books collections is to sort your books alphabetically by genre then author. So you would put them in order of things like Action, Fantasy, Sci-Fi and so on and so forth. Once you divide by genre, you then organize each genre by author alphabetically like mentioned above. This is a less popular method of organizing your books collection, but is still a great way to keep them orderly for easy access as needed. Since I only read nonfiction books primarily, I do like to keep my fiction books separate from my motivational titles.

Sort alphabetically by title. This is a much less common choice, but for some is the favorite. Instead of sorting by author or genre, you simply place your books on shelves in order of the title alphabetically. This is a bit harder to navigate unless you readily know the titles of the books you think you may wish to read.

Don’t Forget to Use Goodreads. I track books I read within Goodreads, and it helps keep me on track with my annual reading goals.

Organized books mean a happy reader, and they make your collection of books a true home library. Invest in quality books shelves and remember to place books back in their place once you are done. Set up a comfortable nook or chair to settle in for a great afternoon of reading a new or old favorite, since these tips will definitely give you a chance to enjoy your books for years to come.
