Dear Summer Discovery Friends & Family,

We have officially wrapped up our 47th year of successful summer programs and are proud to report that all of our students have returned home safely.  Thank you to all of the students, parents, teachers and staff that contributed to another season of life-long memories.  We hope you had a truly amazing experience and we enjoyed meeting each and every one of you.

The summer was full of highlights.  Here are a few of our favorites:

Student Entrepreneurs Compete at Michigan At University of Michigan, students participating the Business and Entrepreneurship Institute presented original business plans to a panel of judges from the local business community and won funding in the form of prizes to launch their ideas.  First place was awarded to DesignU, who offered an internet based service where students and parents could drag and drop furniture from a variety of retailers into a scale 3D rendering of their dorm room to see how their selections fit together.  Then, with one click, they could order all those products to the dorm room to be waiting for them upon their arrival.  Pretty cool!

Mapping the Speed of Light at Penn Students participating in the Experimental Physics Research Academy at University of Pennsylvania explored both fundamental and complex modern physics concepts.  For their final project, lab groups applied a month’s long research and lab experience to construct their own apparatuses to measure the speed of light around the David Rittenhouse Laboratory on campus.

Finance Interns Saves the Day in NYC One of our Interns at Discovery Internships in New York City worked in Finance in New York City and found an accounting error which saved the business multi-millions of dollars.  Talk about noteworthy experience to add to a resume!

Business for a Cause at Cambridge Our amazing Entrepreneurship Class in Cambridge raised over $1,500 through their group business projects and donated it to Oxfam charity to help fight poverty around the world.  The student groups came up with unique money-making ideas and implemented them on campus.  They sold freshly made waffles, tie dye t-shirts and Oxfam awareness bracelets to bring in money for their “businesses” and ultimately the greater cause.

Getting Famous at UCLA At UCLA, our Sports Business students enjoyed a night out at the Nokia Center for the ESPY’s, ESPN’s annual award show which recognizes excellence in sports performance.  They also took to the sidelines for Real Madrid, one of the world’s most elite soccer teams, sold out training session on UCLA’s North Athletic Field.  While out and about in the city our students brushed elbows with celebrities including Lebron James, Katy Perry, and Neil Patrick, just to name a few.
