10 Non-Expensive Things to Do While in New York City

Modern architecture, skyscrapers, parks and wide open spaces, art, culture, and a little bit of history; if you want it, New York City definitely has it. No wonder tourists and vacationers from all over the world choose this place to fill one more space in the travel version of their bucket lists. Still, visiting most of the attractions in New York City does require a hefty sum of money.

But fear not, because here’s a list of activities that won’t burn a hole in your wallet the next time you’re having a city break in New York.

1. Explore Central Park

The best thing about exploring Central Park (aside from it’s free of charge) is that there seems to be a lot going on inside. From free events to random street performers to poetry to notable art installation sites, Central Park will never run out of something for you to engage in.

2. Take a Tour in Brooklyn Brewery

Why not take a guided tour of one of the largest breweries in the world? Brooklyn Brewery, currently distributing top quality beer locally in 25 states and internationally in some 20 countries, is open for free tours every weekend.

3. Spot the Architectural Grandeur of NYC

Amid the sleek and modern design of skyscrapers that represent Modern New York, there are also a number of historical buildings worth seeing here. Notable places to see are the City Hall, the Mausoleum of General Ulysses S. Grant, the Federal Reserve Bank, and the Old Stone House.

4. Travel Back in Time

For history lovers, you’d be glad to know that there are a great number of museums in NYC for free. The Fashion Institute Technology Museum for instance features a detailed collection of American garments from the 18th century to the present. The National Museum of American Indian is a great place to get to know the cultures of the Native Americans while the museum of the Hispanic Society of America features a lush collection of Spanish art.

5. The New York Public Library

The New York Public Library is a sight to behold with its grand exterior fronted by twin marble lions aptly named Patience and Fortitude. Inside is a vast reading room that can accommodate around 500 patrons with desks that are still adorned with the original Carre-and-Hastings lamps. Free tours and exhibits are available too!

6. Go to the Brooklyn Flea Market

No city break to New York is complete without hoarding some goods either as gifts or souvenirs. The Brooklyn Flea Market offers a great variety of tourist wares as well as vintage clothes, vinyl records, antiques, art, and even jewellery for very reasonable prices.

7. Take a Walking Tour of the Grand Central Station

Walking tours are a great way to learn and appreciate the history of a historical place – bonus points that they’re also a great way to meet fellow tourists and travellers! Lucky for you, free walking tours are always available in the Grand Central station every Friday at 12:30pm.

8. Catch Art Film Screenings

The Socrates Sculpture Park in Broadway boasts of an outdoor cinema and a wide selection of independent films, most of them shot and produced in different countries. Each film shown is selected by a pool of noted curators from the Museum of Moving Image, plus they are absolutely free!

9. Go Out for a Romantic Spin

Take your friends or significant other for a fun and romantic spin at the Trump Wollman Rink for a unique ‘old New York experience’ like no other. You can even try night skating (just like in the movies!) as the rink stays open until 11pm during Fridays and Saturdays. Admission requires a minimal fee (around $4.75 to $10.25) but the experience is definitely worth it.

10. Ride the Staten Island Ferry

Despite technically being a mode of transportation for people living in Staten Island and Manhattan, the ferry is still one of the most popular tourist attractions in New York. What’s not to love? The ferry is, after all, free of charge and gives you a great view of the Eastern Seaboard while you relax along the deck. You’ll even see the Statue of Liberty up close without the pricey tour fee!

Happy Travels!
