Reasons to create an e-book vary from individual to individual. Some are authors wishing to self-publish their works for sale on the various e-book retail stores available today. Some are creating the e-book for brand awareness purposes or just for the fun of it. No matter the reason behind the creation of an e-book, a few basic necessities are required for success.
Firstly, one would need to have the manuscript of the e-book one wants to create in a workable digital format. A ‘workable digital format’ is one that allows for easy manipulation of data. If the manuscript is in Word Document (.doc) format or perhaps Text (.txt) or HTML (.html) formats, it is relatively easy to manipulate, rather than when it is in a format like Adobe PDF (.pdf) that is made for print. Apart from the manuscript, one obviously needs to have a computer, with Internet access, and a bit of technological know-how; but not a lot though.
Once the manuscript is in hand, it is now possible to decide on a basic format to put the e-book in, for submission to e-book retail stores or for distribution on reader devices.
When distributing on digital reader devices, common file formats to put the e-book in include the ePub format (.epub) an open-source format supported by Apple (iOS), Barnes & Noble (Nook) and other makers of e-book readers like Sony. The Amazon Kindle e-book reader uses Amazon’s proprietary file format, called Kindle file format. This requires the conversion of e-books from whatever source format it is in to the compatible Kindle format. Fortunately, many tools can be used to this end. There is a free-to-use software available for download online, called the EPUB to Kindle Converter. Another option is to use an online conversion tool, also free-to-use, found on online-convert.com. It allows you to upload the source file you want to convert to the Kindle format, and then download the converted file to your computer.
For distribution on e-book retail stores, a wide range of options exist, but the two most common ones will suffice for this article. The first option is Amazon’s popular self-publishing platform “Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP).” KDP is an easy and fast way to put an e-book up for sale on the Kindle Stores worldwide. KDP accepts a wide range of file formats for the manuscript. These include Word Document (.doc), HTML (.htm or .html), ePub (.epub), Plain Text (.txt), Rich Text Format (.rtf) and the Adobe PDF (.pdf) file format.
