40% Lots of Stuff at Polo—Menswear Picks
Right on the heels of their 5 days of cheer sales, Ralph Lauren just opens it wide to be 40% off nearly everything—with a minimum purchase of $125 and the code MERRY. Predictably, it doesn’t apply to their most expensive luxury stuff. While the price threshold is less than ideal if you’re looking just to get a polo or something, it’s awesome if you want to get some of their nicer stuff. Here is a full list of Polo stuff I’d totally kop.
Tailored Goods
Solid navy blazer—doeskin is a kind of wool twill that’s very sturdy and long-lasting. A solid piece that’ll last for a long time
Double-breasted navy blazer—same fabric. I got a second-hand doeskin DB blazer from ‘94 and the fabric was still sturdy and in amazing shape. Drapes well. Just a great piece.
Navy or dark gray solid suit—excellent staple suits, either color. I’ve only owned a navy suit for a few years and you can’t go wrong, but I occasionally wish I had a charcoal or dark gray one. Either is impeccable though.
Gray flannel suit—I would love to have a seasonal and minimal suit collection. Gray or charcoal flannel for winter, navy or maybe light gray fresco or other lightweight fabric for summer.
Double-breasted pinstripe suit
Tick-weave wool trousers
Tan wool trousers—I’ve always hated tan wool trousers, but I’m looking at these and thinking “y’know they’re not so bad…”
Flannel trousers—staples. Gray and navy for sure. Ignore black.
Gray glen plaid suit—Very subtle pattern that would still be a staple
Brown tweed-y glen plaid sportcoat—I want this. Awesome pattern.
Tan herringbone open-path pocket sportcoat—the open patch pockets give it a southern Italian vibe
Mid-brown large windowpane plaid jacket—another awesome fall-winter jacket
Olive glen plaid sportcoat
Linen trousers—out of season, so a good time to snatch these for a low price
Shirts
Mostly avoid RL shirts but their spread-collar dress shirts are actually pretty good staple go-to pieces if you can get some without the Pony.
Chambray spread-collar shirt—on my list to wear with tweed jacket and a knit tie
Blue striped spread-collar dress shirts:
Navy-stripe poplin spread-collar shirt
Light-blue stripe poplin spread-collar shirt
Mid-blue stripe spread collar shirt
End-on-end blue dress shirt—I have an end-on-end blue shirt and it is awesome. Staple. Would get this before I got poplin.
Blue poplin spread collar dress shirt—listed as poplin but the image is idential to the one above, which is end-on-end. What to believe?
White spread-collar dress shirt—good staple for conservative business dress
Non-logo’d OCBD—for $45, not bad. I’d go with Kamakura though for any more.
Ties
Cashmere navy/blue knit tie
Wool hiking socks
Printed neat tie
Wool-silk grenadine tie—seems like an awesome, textured take on the traditional silk
Perfect repp stripe red/navy/gold tie (pictured above)
Knit cashmere tie—solid, unlike the herringbone one above
Black watch tartan tie
Navy bar stripe repp tie—one of my favorite, most versatile patterned ties
Wool silk glen plaid brown tie—would be great with an OCBD and navy tweed jacket
Shoes
Calf leather penny loafer—same as the suede ones you see me wear all the time but in calf leather
Perforated cap-toe—good for a wardrobe where you’re wearing wool dress trousers everyday
Calf leather tassel loafers—ugh I want these. Someday. Great price.
Suede tassel loafers
Longwings—I dig these in the lighter brown
Beefroll-style penny loafer—these work well with chinos and an OCBD on the weekend
Everything else
Staple leather belt
Suede gloves
Tartan-leather gloves
Tweed and leather gloves
Suede belt 1—my suede belt changed my life
Suede belt 2
Suede belt with gold buckle
Windowpane scarf—pony logo is pretty discrete
Fair Isle socks—not a fan of “fun socks” but these would be cool with boots
Buffalo socks—um, not exactly super versatile, but these are actually pretty sweet
