I first discovered the lush interiors brand edit58 on Instagram a few months ago, and waited in avid excitement for all its gorgeous rugs, cushions, pom-pom baskets and blankets to go live online. A chance meeting with founder and mother of gorgeous twins, Lisa, last week led to lunch and a spontaneous photo tour of her beautiful home in west London. Her interior styling is utterly inspiring…

But before the home photo tour begins, here’s a few things you should know…

Lisa’s story

Lisa’s career in advertising (clients included Air France, Cancer Research UK,  Harvey Nichols, Hilton Hotels, Boutique 1, DKNY and Audi) working in London, Dubai and Singapore combined with a long-term passion for interiors (Lisa’s grandmother is vintage/antiques obsessed and still visits antiques fairs and switches her furniture around) led to some serious interiors research when Lisa and her husband bought their first house in 2007. Lisa looked into everything from paint brands and reclamation yards to auction houses and vintage markets. It was also at this time she purchased pieces from Retrouvious, Lots Road Auction House and Sunbury Antiques Market which still some of her most trusted sources today.

The name

Lisa protests that it’s a boring story behind the name, but I love it! A typical round the kitchen table over coffee with a good friend mulling over the premise of offering a carefully edited selection of key items for the home – baskets, blankets, cushions, rugs and wallhangings. They decided to keep the name simple, and 58 was the number of her house!

The baskets, the rugs

The pieces that inspired the brand… Lisa’s always been obsessed by baskets (her mantra is ‘you can never have too many’!) and when she discovered the Eliza Gran Venice Pom Pom Baskets (created in Santa Monica, California), she knew she had to bring them to the UK market. edit58 was the first UK stockist and she’s thrilled they’ve been such a huge hit. The other incentive for starting edit58 stemmed from the availability (or lack of!) of good rugs. Lisa loves wooden floors (there are no carpet in her home, and her floorboards all painted white, heaven!) but to create a cosy, warm, soft environment she has a rug (or two!) in every room. Frustrated that in the UK the options seemed to be a rug from a high street retailer (mass produced and not very exciting) or from a rug specialist/expensive rug department (think Liberty with £15,000 price tags), she felt there was something in between missing – somewhere to get great vintage rugs with reasonable prices that’s not intimidating or overwhelming.

Her style

In her own words: “I’m certainly not a minimalist, I like to surround myself with ‘things’ – I like to walk into a room and have my eye travel. A home should feel like a home. Based on that, to me, a room needs layers – so I take into account the space, what the room will be used for and by whom. Furniture can be kept simple, but I like vintage pieces mainly as I like that they have a story to tell. I then like to add texture with rugs, cushions, blankets, wall-hangings and art. They really help to soften a room, make it warm and cosy, and add visual interest.”

Most meaningful possession

Again, Lisa tells it best! “There’s three actually! The first is a piece of art – a Japanese block print – that my husband gave to me on our wedding day. He gave it to my bridesmaid for me to open before I left for the church. Each time I look at it, I am instantly transported to the excitement and emotion of the day.

The second is our sofa! It sounds strange but I’m so sentimental about it I don’t think I’ll ever be able to let it go. It was our first ‘investment piece’ when we purchased our first home together. We went into Liberty (slightly inebriated after some drinks in Soho – oh, pre-kids life!) and as soon as I saw it I knew we had to have it. It’s the Russell Pinch ‘Claude’ sofa and I love the simple lines and deep seats. We selected the fabric – lime green velvet! – which on paper sounds hideous but was the best decision ever. It adds interest but honestly acts like a neutral. That sofa has been with us for eight years, has travelled with us when we moved overseas, from London to Dubai to Singapore and then home again – and I love that it’s been our constant companion and always made wherever we have lived feel like home.

The final piece is the Lucinda Chambers ‘jubilee’ needlepoint wall-hanging from the Rug Company that my husband gave me for my 30th birthday. At the time we had just moved from London to Dubai and I was a little homesick. I hung it above our bed and whenever I looked at it, it reminded me of home. My love for it might also have something to do with the fact it’s covered in pom poms too!
