Remy hair extensions are simply hair extensions made of Remy human hair. Remy hair is the highest quality and grade of human hair available and is thus the most preferred choice for hair extensions. Hair extensions made of Remy hair give the most natural look. Remy hair extensions usually last up to three to six months with good maintenance.
What is Remy Hair Extensions
Remy hair is usually considered to be the highest quality of human hair. This is because in Remy hair, the cuticles are intact and not stripped like in other hair extensions which are non Remy. Preservation of the cuticles of hair and aligning them in one direction gives the Remy hair extensions a highly natural look. These hairs are also super soft, silky and shiny and completely tangle free. These properties last in Remy hair extensions for lifetime. Remy human hair are usually sorted carefully and meticulously after obtaining them from a hair donor and it is ensured that all the cuticles are of the same length. The collection of Remy hair is done in such a method so that all the hair strands are aligned in the natural direction of their growth. This helps maintain their natural texture pattern and makes them tangle free due to the same cuticle direction. The term ‘Remy’ refers to the characteristics of hair and the method used to manufacture the hair extensions. Remy hair has qualities like unilateral cuticle direction i.e. the hair follicles are all in a single direction. Remy hair is only very slightly processed to form hair extensions. The USP or the defining feature of Remy hair is that these are gathered from the heads of donors in such a way as to keep the hair cuticles properly aligned in relation to its neighboring hairs. Remy hair because of its soft and sliky qualities are not only used to produce extensions but also hair wigs and hair pieces of high quality.
Virgin Hair vs Remy Hair vs Non-Remy hair
Remy hair differs from virgin hair in that they are chemically treated or dyed to produce hair extensions. Virgin hair on the other hand refers to completely unprocessed and intact human hair, which have not been colored, bleached, dyed, permed or chemically treated or processed in any way. Virgin and Remy hair do have the same features of unidirectional cuticles though.
Pros of Remy Human Hair Extensions
Human hair can be colored and dyed easily. These can also be heated i.e. curled or straightened as compared to synthetic hair which has limited healing applications. Human hair extensions are also more natural looking and blend in easily with your true real hair. These are easier to style and last much longer than the synthetic hair extensions. Non-Remy hair are the most readily available and popular type of hair. Here the hair does not run in the same direction and the roots and tips are all mixed up. These do however undergo chemical treatment.
Hair Weave
Hair weave is simply a treatment where human hair or artificial hairs are weaved into a person’s natural hair, very close to the scalp. Hair weaves give look and feel of longer and thicker hair. Hair weaving is done by people to improve the length or thickness or even the texture of their natural hair. The hair which is woven can be of any length, color, and texture as per a person’s choice.
Hair weaves can be applied in a variety of ways. A hair weave can cover the entire head almost like a wig or can be used to accentuate the natural hair. For example a hair weave can be used to add volume and inches to the hair. These are usually called extensions and hair extensions are thus simply a type of hair weave.
Hair weaves can be time consuming and expensive. Hair weaves made of human hair are more expensive than those made of synthetic hair. A hair weave usually lasts for up to one to three months before it can be taken out. Hair weaves usually work better on coarser hair as fine hair slip out of the cornrows quickly and the weave is not held tightly in place.
Hair weaves vs Hair Extensions
While hair weaves are usually sewn or glued on to a cornrow that runs around the side of the head, hair extensions are fastened to the strands of hair either with an adhesive or a clamp. Both hair weaves and hair extensions are available in human as well as synthetic hair though.
Types of Hair Weaves
A hair weave is created by sewing together strands of hair with fine threads. This is done either by hand or by machines. These strips of hair are called wefts. These wefts of hair are then glued or sewn onto braided cornrows. A hair weave can be partial, full, or Malaysian/braidless weave.
Partial Hair Weaves
These are used with natural hair to create a longer or fuller look to the hair. This is done by braiding sections of the head into cornrows and then applying a weft of hair. It goes without saying that the weft of hair being applied should be the closest match possible to the natural hair in color and texture. While applying partial weaves, it is especially important to ensure that the hair weaves blend naturally into the hair.
Full Weaves
Full weaves refers to the look created by cornrowing all the natural hair tightly and then applying wefts of hair to the cornrow. Full weaves allow a person to have a completely new and different look than their original look and provides limitless texture, color and styling options. However, it is difficult to wash the roots of the hair in full weaves and this causes the scalp to be itchy. Also washing these too often shorten the life of the weave as it causes the cornrows to loosen.
Malaysian or Braidless Weaves
These are the weaves which instead of being sewn onto the cornrows, are sewn on to micro links that are wrapped around the hair. This is actually a cross between a weave and an extension. Like in a weave, the hair comes grouped in wefts to further attach to the microlinks. These hairs are however, further attached to the natural hair just like an extension is. Since there is no braiding involved, this style is less bulky and is closer to the scalp and works well with all hair types and not just coarse hair. Also, as in this type of a weave, the natural hair are loose under the weave, it gives volume to the hair and allows for easy cleaning.
Hair Extensions
Hair extensions are simply attached to the strands of hair either through small clamps called micro loops or micro links or through the use of an adhesive. Temporary clip-on extensions are also available which add style, volume and length to the hair easily and quickly.
Types of hair extensions
There are various types of hair extensions depending on the method of their application.
Micro loop or Micro Ring Hair Extensions
These are also called micro loops or shrink loops extensions. Here small bands made of metal or rubber is used to clamp around natural hair. These bands are called rings or loops. Usually these extensions do not require any adhesive thus making them the preferred choice of many. Sometimes some adhesive is also applied to the inside of the bands to avoid and prevent slippage. The hair extension is then applied to this band to hang loosely. To remove these bands however, special tools as well as service of a specialist may be required. These extensions are usually very natural looking and are quite secure as are held tightly in place with the help of the rings or loops and are thus durable and enduring. When properly cared for, these extensions can last from four to six months.
Tape Hair Extensions
These hair extensions are simply the ones which in place of the usual clip-ins have a double sided tape to apply hair wefts. These tapes are undetectable once placed on the scalp. These hair extensions are very simple and easy to apply and use. These can be washed and styled easily. These are also suitable for most hair types and are lightweight. These are semi permanent and can last up to three months. These are not only simple to apply but also to remove and can also be used over and over again.
Remy Hair Extensions for Short Hair
Contrary to popular perception, hair extensions can be worn nicely with even short hair. It is however important to choose the most suitable and correct type of extensions for short hair since all types of extensions might not work well with short hair. Usually, clip on extensions and strand by strand i.e. micro and fusion extensions do not work well with short hair. The best hair extensions for short hair are tape extensions as these blend very well with the natural hair due to the thin wefts of hair. The most important point to keep in mind while applying extensions on short hair is that they should blend in well with the natural hair.
