Does your image need an overhaul?

Image advice from an engineer?

A few years ago we, the image consultants, got some branding advice from an engineer client. He said our website didn’t represent how good we actually were. Ouch! (Terry was especially hurt because he designed our first website, but we realized the client was right.) Our site was part of our brand and it didn't create a great first impression of us. So we hired a professional to update our site.

Why we’re doing a website makeover

Since then we have gone through a few website redesigns. Now it's time for another website update, one that is responsive to smart phones and includes new services like executive coaching etc. We’ll reveal our redesign soon.

What about you?

Is it time to re-evaluate your professional wardrobe or LinkedIn profile? Do you need to update something on your personal brand? Move it from good to great?

Here are five tips to update your brand and personal image:

Tip 1 - Is your wardrobe dating you?

I often encounter seasoned professionals wearing outdated clothing. You may not notice, but others will. Even if it still fits, wearing dated clothing can imply that your ideas and thinking may be outmoded. This doesn’t mean you should jump on the latest trend, but be aware of what’s current. Use your own sense of style to incorporate new pieces into your classic wardrobe. See our post on Age Appropriate Dress Tips for Women and Advice to Dress up a Man's Suit or Jacket

Tip 2 - Cast a critical eye on your eyewear?

The eyes are the windows to the soul. Your eyes are the centre of communication and get noticed immediately. Like clothing, eyewear styles changes. If your eyeglasses are 3 or 4 years old, they can make your brand look dated. Choose a new pair that suits your face shape and enhances your eye colour. Don’t be afraid of bold or striking glasses if they suit your style.

Tip 3 - A new do or haircut?

A hairstyle is an important image accessory and reflects a person’s personality and personal brand. When you're looking for a new look, consider your industry/profession, your hair texture, features and lifestyle. It’s important to consult a trusted hair stylist or image consultant who can give you objective feedback before embarking on a radical new look. Tip 4 – Colour me great?

Speaking of colour. Have you ever been feeling fine but someone comes up and asks if you’re feeling ill? Chances are you were wearing the wrong colours! The right colours that suit your complexion can make you look healthy and vibrant. Wearing the wrong colours, does the opposite. Investing in a colour consultation gets you more value from your clothes. It lasts a lifetime and keeps paying dividends in the way of compliments, confidence and saves you time and money as well. Tip 5 –  Rocking your LinkedIn profile?

Last but not least. Save this till after you have updated your personal brand with the 4 elements above. Now that you've overhauled your professional image, show off your new look on your LinkedIn profile. See our post 7 Tips for a Great LinkedIn Photo
