In recent times the Nigerian economy has taken a downturn, leaving us to struggle with the consequences of higher exchange rates and increased cost. Our beloved luxury brands like BlackUp, Kat Von D, Khuraira and Mac cost more than they already did, and just about everything has doubled in price.
Being that as it may, the urban woman still has to put her best face forward, whether in the workplace or out in the streets. So, whether your makeup product purchase is for personal use or for a professional makeup kit, you will need to choose your products with the cost in mind. To splurge or to save?
You can save on makeup remover by using good quality coconut oil and splurge on good quality makeup brushes. Brush sets from Hegai and Esther, BH Cosmetics, Zaron, Elf, Real Techniques, are affordable and are good quality. Remember that application is key.
Save on lip products with lipsticks from Milani, Kuddy, Elsaspro, Zamoux, Blot, Tara and Zaron as well. Zamoux Cosmetics Matte lipstick in The She is a sure dupe for Mac’s RubyWoo, in colour and quality. You can also save on Mascara, concealers (La girl Pro Conceal is a good choice), lip pencils (Zaron pencils are a winner), eye liners, blush and bronzer as well as contour kits (if you need them). You can save on purchasing setting sprays like Mac Fix+ by choosing the Elf Makeup Mist and Set to make sure your makeup stays in place.
The possibilities though are endless with eye shadows. There are an array of awesome affordable palettes and single or duo shadows from Tara, Zaron, BH Cosmetics, Elsaspro, La Girl, Nyx, Elf, Wet n Wild, and Black Opal especially if they are for personal use. There is absolutely no need to break the bank if you’re not a professional. But if you’re in splurge mode, try shadows from Khuraira, BM Pro, Sugarpill, etc.
One splurge however will be foundation and/or face primer. In the Nigerian heat, you will need to invest in a product that will protect your skin and keep you looking flawless and a few brands to choose from include, Black Opal Even True and True Color, Blackup, Khuraira, Fashion Fair, Tara, Kuddy, Maybelline Fit Me, Revlon Colour Stay, Zaron, Classic, Mary Kay Timewise, Black Radiance, etc. Keep in mind that your personal preference and skin type will apply here.
One tip though, if you’re a working woman who wears makeup every day. You can purchase cheaper drugstore products for everyday use and save your luxury products for special occasions. That way, you save on your luxury or expensive refills or repurchases.
Beware though of counterfeit makeup products, they are usually cheaper and promise lot more than the original. Do not use products with misspelled names or packaging. Save yourself the pain and discomfort of peeling lips or skin and/or burns. Most brands will attach a scratch card to the product to maintain authenticity, don’t hesitate to scratch and confirm.
