When it comes to your beauty stash, is there such thing as too much makeup? Yes, there is, but according to an eye opening study, most of us don’t care.

Stowaway Cosmetics and Poshly recently surveyed over 4,000 beauty consumers about their habits and unsurprisingly, most (87%) are aware that expiration dates exist. However, a staggering 89% hold onto their old makeup anyway in case “they might need it later.”

Since over 75% of that same group routinely don’t finish makeup and use just 5 of the average 40 products they own, that means a lot of money and time is being wasted.

Ironically, eye makeup is the most treasured part of our daily routines, despite having the quickest expiration date. Because of the guilt that comes along with discarding products, women between the ages of 25-42 would rather suffer reoccurring breakouts instead of downsizing their bathroom vanities.

A standout conclusion of Stowaway’s findings is that 50% of 25-34 years old think there’s too much makeup in each product. Understandably so, you’ll be hard pressed to find a happy medium between your teeny sample and a full sized bottle, which can ultimately affect your allegiance to a specific brand when you dip in and out of them so quickly.

It would be interesting to see how changing product sizes ultimately affects buyer trends, but with so many competitors trying to get a piece of the beauty space, we have a feeling the current model is a happy medium for the execs behind each label.

Read Stowaway’s entire study here and make note of the makeup expiration dates below:

Mascara and Eyeliner: 4-6 months

Cream/Liquid Foundations & Concealers: 6 months

Powder Products: 2 years

Lipstick & Gloss: 2 years
