High fashion and fast fashion collided at Paris Fashion Week when H&M took the stage.

The show started with a silver spacesuit clad Caroline de Maigret, a Paris-based music producer and DJ, announcing the start of the show via a radio and jumping into her space pod turned DJ booth to start the music.

The space theme continued as a star-studded cast of models including Joan Smalls, Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner made their way on a runway with a moon crater surface. The line began with military greens, metallics and whites and deep blues. However, as the collection progress it took on more Earthly tones, with quilted outerwear in burnt orange, burgundy and brown tones.

The space theme was most evident in several items from the collection, like the all white ensembles with loose fitting turtlenecks, the chevron-pattern pieces and the knee-high moon boots. The brand stayed true to its aesthetic, and had some costumer favorites, such as the chunky knit sweaters and faux fur coats.

Some pieces that totally missed the mark were the onesies that Smalls and Hadid were, despite their model physique, unable to pull off.

While it would be a stretch to compare the H&M show to other runways like Balmain and Dries Van Noten, it is refreshing to see the fashion retailer proving you don’t need to spend a lot to have style.
