Beauty alterations in the form of plastic surgery are one of the oldest procedures to man. For centuries, women and men have spent countless dollars and time to achieve an ideal look based on nonsensical standards.

In the ’80s, it was all about breast enhancements. The ’90s were dedicated to pouty lips. Early 2000s made fat transferal the hottest thing. And now for the first time, people are getting surgery to look more natural. Yes, surgery to look like they haven’t had surgery.

The odd trend is the No. 1 thing clients are asking surgeons for, with a short list of celebrities they aspire to look like. “The most popular nose requested is Catherine Duchess of Cambridge (formerly known as Kate Middleton),” NYC-based plastic surgeon Dr. Barry M. Weintraub told us. “It is natural looking, not skeletonized, and harmonizes with her specific features. In regard to my face-lift patients, they often cite Demi Moore and Cindy Crawford, both of whom look beautiful, elegant, and recognizable as themselves.”

In a time when over-sexualized characters like Nicky Minaj, Amber Rose and Kim Kardashian make the extreme seem quotidian it actually seems contradictory to say that women don’t want to look like this, but it’s true. “The influence of the Internet has educated patients, and the overdone look of too much plastic surgery has become thankfully less desirable. As a result, we are moving toward an age of elegance, with patients wanting my less-is-more approach. If someone has had plastic surgery, you should not be able to tell,” Weintraub added.

So what does that mean for the others? In cities like New York, Miami and Los Angeles, illegal butt injections have caused a slew of legal and health complications. Contrary to the natural look, it seems that the other spectrum of trend is to look the exact opposite: artificial. The American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery released a list of predicted plastic surgery trends for 2014 and found that Juvederm Voluma, a “designer filler” will be one of the hottest products this year.

So the reports leave things on the fence. While some women want to look natural others attain perfection, even if it looks fake. In the meantime, we’ll wait to see what’s on the horizon in embracing how we’re born.
