I’m always in two minds about modernising old buildings that have a lot of character but then you come across a modernisation like this one and you realise that the results can be quite astounding. Every room of this Islington maisonette by Larissa Johnston Architects is filled with light, creating a bright spacious house throughout. Modern materials seamlessly connect with the more traditional, most significantly the plywood used to create the kitchen that connects the ground and first floors. The box shaped structure encloses the kitchen, lots of storage and the first flight of stairs. It’s the sort of clever design that you would usually associate with a much smaller space where floorspace is at a premium. The result is a beautiful gallery-like space that gives each of the well-chosen items of furniture and lighting a chance to shine.
It’s not the first time I’ve seen plywood used beautifully in interior design but it’s probably the most extensive. I’ve been thinking about how I could start to incorporate it into my own home but I may have to take a leaf out of Nina Holst’s book, her blog Stylizimo showcases her beautiful home in which she has used black-washed plywood as a splash-back in her kitchen.
