Have you read this wonderful book by Audrey Wood? Piggies was one of my childhood favourites and it’s really a classic that most children can’t get enough of!
Today I wanted to share why I love Piggies so much and share 14 activities you can enjoy after reading the book.
Piggies is a sweet book featuring a child’s hands and the little piggies that reside on it – real, miniature-sized piggies!
There are “two fat little piggies, two smart little piggies, two long little piggies, two silly little piggies, and two wee little piggies” — and they spend all day getting into all sorts of adventures and fun!
I love how detailed Audrey and Don Wood’s illustrations always are and Piggies does not disappoint — each and every piggie can be seen getting up their own cute and hilarious antics on every single page. Kids love pausing and pointing out all of the little details as you read through this book together, and it’s so insightful to see which piggies they naturally feel drawn to “checking first” on every page.
While the book doesn’t address right and left hands, it provides a great opportunity to discuss the concept with your children and also point out how the little child wore mittens when it’s cold, and washed up after getting muddy.
Children can easily envision that it is their own “piggies” being featured in the book as each page is a close up of the sweetly illustrated hands, and all of the activities featured are typical children’s activities.
If your child loves Piggies as much as mine does, here are a few Piggy crafts and activities for them to enjoy:
1. Download some “this little piggie” finger puppets from Playdough to Plato for some rhyming fun.
2. You can try painting with some coffee grinds to make your own muddy pig pictures like Two-daloo.
3. In the book, the piggies enjoy getting muddy — why not let your kids play with a garden clean mud sensory bin?
4. Or, if you’re not real-mud averse, try some mud painting, as described on Learn Play Imagine.
5. After getting all muddy, the piggies enjoyed a bubble bath — this bubble bin from Fun at Home with Kids is epic!
6. We all know piggies like to snack — why not try these adorable Oreo pigs from Kids Activity Blog?
7. Or, if you’re more into healthy snacks, we recently made this watermelon piggie snack, inspired by this Nutella piggie sandwich!
8. This cotton ball pig craft from Housing a Forest engages those little piggies with some fine motor skills.
9. Make those little piggies the start in a work of art with this Handprint Pig Print from Crafty Morning.
10. I so appreciate these laundry clip piggies from Serendipitous Discovery and how they can stand up all on their own!
11. What about a piggie breakfast? This piggy bagel snack from i Heart Crafty Things is pink and perfect.
12. No Time for Flashcards shares an easy piggy snout tutorial.
13. Has your child learned the “This Little Piggy” nursery rhyme?
This little piggy went to market,
this little piggy stayed home.
This little piggy had roast beef,
this little piggy had none.
And this little piggy went wee wee wee
all the way home.
14. Explore the concepts of hot and cold – try using different household objects or even basins of warm and cold water.
