The Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) is pleased to announce that the short documentary film, Ovation for Oscar: An Exhibition at SCAD Museum of Art, created by SCAD alumni and students, premiered at the Marché du Film at the Cannes Film Festival. The film screened on May 21, in Palais F, at 11:30am and 1:30pm.

Oscar de La Renta was born on July 22, 1932 in the Dominican Republic. He was trained by Cristóbal Balenciaga and successfully led his own world renowned fashion house, as well as Balmain, from studios based in New York and Paris. He died on October 20, 2014.

Focusing on the first posthumous museum tribute to legendary fashion designer Oscar de la Renta, the documentary chronicles the creation of the exhibition, “Oscar de la Renta: His Legendary World of Style,” as it was prepared exclusively for the SCAD Museum of Art by SCAD trustee André Leon Talley. The filmmakers also documented the making of the highly anticipated, soon-to-be-released Rizzoli book, “Oscar de la Renta: His Legendary World of Style,” written by Talley and photographed in conjunction with the exhibition.

This intimate look behind the scenes reveals the nuances and sophistication of the demanding, deadline-oriented work of fashion photographers, white-gloved art handlers and discerning curators as they research, assess, mount and produce a major museum exhibition honoring the late designer, artist and cultural icon.

De la Renta’s friendship with SCAD encompassed more than a decade. He was recognized as the first recipient of the André Leon Talley Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2001 SCAD Fashion Show. Subsequent winners have included Tom Ford, Miuccia Prada, Vera Wang, and Marc Jacobs.

The film, told from the perspective of SCAD student and former Oscar de la Renta intern Sloane Mayberry, features observations by fashion experts and others who worked closely with the late designer including Alex Bolen, CEO of Oscar de la Renta, LLC.

SCAD President and Founder Paula Wallace notes, “This film, created by SCAD students and alumni, comes full circle by celebrating the legendary designer who did so much to support our students and their careers. He was one of those rare spirits who was interested in everything and everyone, and his work is a beautiful reflection of a life fully lived.”

More than 60 unique de la Renta ensembles from the closets of First Ladies Hillary Clinton and Laura Bush; celebrities including  Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman, Sarah Jessica Parker, Taylor Swift and Oprah Winfrey; and best-dressed women Anna Wintour, Mercedes T. Bass, Lynn Wyatt, and Annette de la Renta are revealed throughout the film and celebrated at the exhibition unveiling. In the film, close friends of the de la Renta family and special guests reflect on the late designer’s life, understanding of beauty, femininity and elegance, and his role as a mentor to future designers.

The 21-minute film was created by SCAD film and television students and alumni: producer Tyler Reid (M.F.A. candidate); director Ryan Curtis (B.F.A. 2013); editors Hanny Purnomo Boyer (M.A. 2009), Craig Boyer (M.F.A. 2009) and Laura Minto (B.F.A. 2015) and director of photography Zach Graber (M.F.A. 2012).
