Mazda offers a glimpse at its new seven-seat SUV ahead of the LA motor show, but the new model isn’t coming to the UK

This is the first official design sketch for the new Mazda CX-9, which will make its debut at the LA motor show later this month.

The sketch reveals the CX-9 has more aggressive exterior appearance than its predecessors and takes some design cues from the Koeru concept car unveiled at the Frankfurt motor show in September.

Mazda said the new CX-9 is the latest evolution of its Kodo design language and “moves toward a more premium design execution that befits a three-row midsize crossover SUV.” The CX-9 offers seven seats as standard.

Engine options for this second-generation CX-9 haven’t been revealed, but Mazda has stated it will feature “the latest SkyActiv technologies”. The current CX-9 comes with only one engine choice in the US – a 3.7-litre V6 petrol with 269bhp and 270lb ft of torque. It seems likely that the new car will continue to offer one petrol engine.

Despite the growing appetite for SUVs and crossovers in Europe, there are currently no plans to sell the new Mazda CX-9 here.
