Indian Media Today: Changing Perceptions
Topic Highlights: The Indian media today is affected by a host of factors such as political, social, economic and technological. It also includes cost-Cutting, understaffing, speed-up and, in the case of broadcasting, relentless competition in the area of TRPs. Not surprisingly, journalism has thus changed the way it conducts itself and gathers its content. In terms of processes, it is very different from the journalism that informed society half a century ago and even as recently as a couple of decades into the past. This has led to a changing public perception of the world of journalism and there is spirited debate on media practices going on in the public sphere. What is this changing perception? How do journalists perceive their role as watchdogs in the world’s largest democracy? Are we making proper use of the wonderful gifts of communication technology to make the world a better and more informed place? Or are we becoming as commercially exploitative as the very entities, organizations and individuals that we identify and expose? The need for introspection in the face of several recent developments in the profession is now acute. We welcome you to join the discussion to understand where we stand, vis a vis a career in the world of Indian print, online and broadcast media today.

John Paul Puthusery john paul
John Paul Puthusery is a writer who has penned screenplays for nearly 100 Malayalam movies. He is on the guest faculty of many colleges. Simply referred to as John Paul, he was initially active in film societies and, as a freelance journalist, wrote screenplays for short movies films and advertisements. Chamaram, Ilakkangal, Palangal, Rachana, Arorumariyathe, Avidathe Pole Ivideyum, Ormakkayi, Sandhya Mayangum Neram, Kattathe Kilikkoodu, Kathodu Kathoram, Utsavapittennu are some of his major works. He was the founder general secretary for MACTA, an association of film technicians. The awards he won include the Nana Gallop poll award for the best screenplay writer, Kerala film critics’ association award, and the State award for the best film book for M.T. Oru Anuyathra. He was the producer of the movie Oru Cherupunchiri directed by M.T Vasudevan Nair, which has won him acclaim and awards at the state, national and international levels.

Manoj K Das
Manoj K Das was the launch editor of Times of India and Deccan Chronicle in Kerala. He re-launched The New Indian Express in Kerala as its resident editor. He also Introduced City Express, a metro-focused newspaper in Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram.
Manoj introduced five new TV programmes and launched operations of Asianet News in Kochi, the commercial hub of Kerala, during his stint as its resident editor (at the level of deputy editor-in-chief).
He currently edits the Kerala edition of the Times of India whose Kerala launch was unique in that it was the first time that the company rolled out editions across a state. Besides, it was the first experiment in partnering with a prominent Malayalam daily, Mathrubhumi, for printing and distributing the product.
Carol Andrade
Carol Andrade is a veteran of the journalism scenario in Mumbai, having been in active journalism since 1974, She has worked with The Times of India, Mid-Day and The Afternoon Despatch and Courier, as reporter, senior reporter, chief reporter. She was Editor of the TOI Group’s Metropolis on Saturday, then took over the Response Edit function (again in the TOI), to bring out their area specific supplements. At one point of time, she was in charge of all the supplements nationally, in subjects ranging from automobiles and education to the Pluses or niche papers for different regions – nearly 100 of them. Currently, Carol Andrade is with The Afternoon Despatch and Courier as the editor and with St Pauls Institute of Communication Education as the director of the course.
Johny Lukose
Johny Lukose is the News Director with Manorama News and anchors the popular “Nere Chovve” [Straight Talk] programme, a show which, with over 300 episodes to its credit, creates headlines week after week, bagging 40 awards and counting! A Postgraduate in English Literature, his career in journalism spans some thirty years which commenced with the prominent Malayalam daily, Malayala Manorama, and was the News Editor of its Trivandrum unit before taking charge as the Editorial Head of the Manorama News Channel in 2006. At Malayala Manorama, he specialized in interviews, feature writing and political analysis, his being a very familiar byline. A recipient of many awards for excellence in journalism, his overseas assignments have included USA, Canada, Argentina, Italy, Israel, Sri Lanka etc.
Shashi Baliga
Shashi Baliga is an independent journalist who has worked in the newspaper, magazine and online spaces. She has earlier been Editor, Sunday Features with the Hindustan Times, Mumbai and Editor of Filmfare magazine. She has also worked with Femina and Savvy magazines.
She now writes for a variety of publications, including The Hindu and holds lectures on journalism at St Pauls Institute of Communication Education and the Xavier Institute of Communication, Mumbai.
Jacob George
Backed with a strong experience of more than 30 years, Jacob George is a prominent journalist and a well known television personality in the state. He started his career with the Mathrubhumi daily and later moved on to India Today. He was the president of the Kerala Union of Working Journalists (KUWJ), the only organization of the journalists’ community in the state for three years from 1998. At present, he is the Chief Editor of The Health Café, a national magazine on health and wellness being published from Thiruvananthapuram. He is also conducting a weekly programme Vattamesa on Kairali – People channel. The programme is a discussion forum that goes deep into various political, social, academic and cultural issues. He has an MA in English Literature and MJ (Master’s degree in Journalism and Mass Communication). He has a special interest in the study of Broadcast Voice; Jacob lives in Thiruvananthapuram.
Fr. Boby Alex Mannamplackal
Fr. Boby Alex has been working as the Executive Editor of Deepika Daily and its allied publications for the last two years. Deepika is the first Malayalam daily, established in 1887. Fr. Boby holds a Masters degree in Mass Communication and Journalism from the University of Louisiana USA, and has done advanced research in education and media at the Louisiana State University. He is a winner of the prestigious Fulbright- Hays Award from the US department of education. Father Boby has presented research papers at numerous international professional conferences and at several foreign universities. His special area of interest includes the digital media and the internet.

The Indian media today is influenced by a host of political, social, economic and technological factors. These include political pressures, cost-cutting and understaffing in newsrooms, activist journalism and the growing importance of social media, and in broadcasting, the relentless competition for TRPs. As a result, journalism has dramatically changed the way it gathers its content and conducts itself. In both processes and approach it is vastly different from the journalism of barely a decade ago. In turn, this has led to changing public perception of the world of journalism and much public debate about media practices.
What is this changing role? How do journalists see their role as watchdogs in the world’s largest democracy? Are we making use of communication technology to make the world a better and more informed place? Or are we becoming as commercially exploitative as the very entities, organizations and individuals that we expose? The need for introspection is now acute.

Sashi Kumar Sashi Kumar is a Print & TV Journalist, Filmmaker and Media Entrepreneur. Presently he is the Chairman of Media Development Foundation & Asian College of Journalism, Chennai.
In the late seventies he was among the earliest Newscasters in English on Doordarshan, India’s national TV network. In 1992 he founded and launched Asianet, India’s first satellite TV channel in a regional language. In 1999 he founded and endowed the Media Development Foundation as a nonprofit public Trust dedicated to excellence in journalism education and best practices in the profession. He received the Vijayaraghavan Memorial Award for contribution to Journalism, 2007. He was awarded the Swadeshabhimani-Kesari Puraskaram (the highest award for the media instituted by the government of Kerala) in 2011 for his contribution to media. He writes a regular fortnightly column titled ‘Unmediated’ in Frotnline (a publication of The Hindu group). He is Member, Empowered Committee on Information, Communication & Technology (ICE), Prime Minister’s Office, New Delhi; Member of the Expert Committee set up to go into working of Prasar Bharati; India Director on the Board of Real News – Independent World Television among many others.
Gnana Rajasekaran
He is a National Award Winner, Director of Films and has written and directed several plays, including a collection of three plays titled Vayiru (1980). The 1996 Hindi version of Vayiru won an all-India award for Best Script. Rajasekaran is the dean of the SRM Sivaji Ganesan Film Institute, Chennai. He also serves as a Director on the Board of BGR Energy Systems Ltd. Before his career as a filmmaker, he worked as a technical officer with the Intelligence Bureau in Mumbai for four years, where many of his plays were staged. In 1983, he was appointed to the Indian Administrative Service in the Kerala cadre.
Nityanand Jayaraman
An engineer, journalist and now an activist, Nityanand Jeyaraman has travelled and worked across the globe but it is in doing his bit for the environment that he holds closest to his heart. He writes on environmental issues for various magazines and newspapers and is a visiting faculty at Asian College of Journalism. Along with three friends who had worked with NGOs, he started the Anti-Corporate Collective in 2004. It now has 16 core members, eight of them based in Chennai. Over the years, this outfit evolved into the Vettiver Collective. He is currently protesting against the Cheyyur Power Project and raises issues related to beach encroachments.
Vincent Asokan
Vincent Asokan, son of legendary actor Asokan, has followed in his father’s footsteps by becoming an acclaimed villain in South Indian cinema. He has acted in films such as Aei, Pokkiri, Yogi and Azhwar. Though he has played the hero in Sila Nerangalil and got many offers to play lead roles, he believes that a villain’s role offers him far more scope. However, he is open to doing all kinds of characters and would, one day, like to dabble in comedy, just as his late father did in the latter part of his career.

Justice (Retd.) Santosh Hegde
His Excellency, Justice N.Santosh Hegde hails from Udupi, Karnataka.He completed his degree in Law from Government Law College, Bangalore. He joined the Bar association in 1966 and in November 1989 he was appointed Senior AdditionalSolicitor Generalof India- the first person to occupy that office from Karnataka. In 1999, he was appointed a judge of the Supreme Court of India directly from the Bar association, one of the only 4 persons so far to be so appointed in the history of our highest court of our country. On 3 August 2006, he was appointed Lokayukta of State of Karnataka for a term of 5 years under the provisions of the Karnataka Lokayukta Act, 1984.
His excellency, Justice N. Santosh Hegde was conferred Honorary Doctorate of Law by the University of Mangalore in 2005, by the Karnataka State Open University, Mysore in, 2009 and by Tumkur University in 2010. He received the Man of the Year award by Times of India for two consecutive years, in 2010 & 2011 and NDTV Indian of the Year in 2010 in recognition of his pioneering and uncompromising contribution to expose the Corruption that was eating up the very existence of our nation. In 2011, he was honoured by Sitaram Jindal Foundation for Exemplary Service in the field of Socialdevelopment, which carried a cash prize of Rs One Crore. The Magnanimous and caring person of His excellency Mr Hegde had no mind to hold on to that cash and so gave away entire sum to the Indian army Welfare Fund. He was awarded the Nani Palkhiwala MemorialAward for the year 2013-14. The Award amount of Rs2.50 lakhs were given to Children’s Wing of Tata MemorialCancer Hospital, Mumbai. There are several other awards and honours which he received for the noble services that he rendered to the Nation.

Mathew Veedon
Mathew Veedon, born and brought up in Zambia, was for two decades a financialjournalist, half of that with Reuters. MrVedon was the firstjournalist to be hired ten years ago at Reuters’Bangalore newsroom which now employs around 200 journalists. He also worked for about four and half years in the news agency’s regional hub in Singapore before returning to Bangalore in 2013 as Publishing Editor, overseeing top-news pages and newsletters. Before he came to Reuters, he worked with the Economic Times, Bangalore and Bridge News and CrisilMarketWire, Mumbai. He holds Degrees in economics from Loyola College, Chennai and Management from Times School of Marketing, Delhi. Mr Veedon is married and has a six-year-old daughter. He loves to watch documentaries on nature, and enjoys cricket and long walks whenever he has some leisure time.

K.M. Chaitanya
K.M Chaithanya, a film director, documentary maker and theater person, holds a Masters Degree in communications from Hyderabad Central University. He worked under the great and accomplished film maker and playwright GrishKarnad as an Associate director. His first feature film AaDinagalu in Kannada, won severalawards including the FilmFare Awards for Best Director and Best Feature Film in 2007, south Indian categories.. He also won awards for Best Debutant Director by the South Indian Cinematographers’ Association, Chennai Film Fans Association and Raghavendra Chithravani Award. AaDinagalu was listed by The Week among the top Indian films of 2007.
He won the Mahindra Excellence in Theatre Award for Best Director for the theatre production “BikhareBimb”(Hindi). He also directed the TV series- ‘back to the Floor’ (2004] for the BBC World. This programme featured leaders and CEOs of prominent Companies and Industry in India. He directed “Cancer Stories” (2002- 2003]- a documentary on Cancer, for the patients in the UK and it was released before a panel of Experts on Cancer at the Radcliffe Royal Infirmary, Oxford University, UK. This documentary, extensively researched and made a unique contribution to understand the illness and respond to it effectively, took a year in the making.

Radhakrishnan Ramachandran
Radhakrishnan Ramachandran is a media professional turned entrepreneur with over 20 years of experience across print, TV and digital media. He turned entrepreneur in 2000, when he co founded India Syndicate, a leading digitalcontent solutions company. Prior to that, he was Chief of Bureau at CNBC Tv18.
Radhakrishnan launched iStream.com in early 2012 as a premium online video destination after raising$ 5 million from SAIF partners.The goalwas to build an online video product which was India’s answer to Hulu and Netflix. It took off well, clocking over 6 million unique users and 12 million video views by March 2013. The dream run was cut short when it failed to raise the second round of funding and he decided to shut down the portalin May 2013. However, he continues to believe in the online video space and so has launched his third venture Pepper Media, an online video production and distribution company.
Radhakrishnan holds a Masters degree in Communication & Journalism from University of Kerala and an Engineering degree in IT from SJCE, Mysore.
Sujit John
Sujit John, the Business Editor of The Times of India, Bangalore edition, has been with TOI for the past 18 years, of which he spent thirteen ofthose years in Bangalore. Mr John started his career as an Assistant Editor on the Edit Page in 1995. He also briefly worked with The Observer and was made a researcher for the government’s 1Oth Finance Commission. The Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry named him the best business journalist of the year 2009. Sujit was graduated in Economics from St Stephen’s College in Delhi University and completed his MA and MPhil in Economics from the JawaharlalNehru University (JNU] New Delhi. In JNU, he was active in the Students Union and was elected four times a member and later became its president.
