ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – A sudden blast of cold weather didn’t stop area Boy Scout units from holding another successful Scouting For Food drive.

Greater St. Louis Area Council chief executive Ron Green was at a south-side fire station on Saturday morning, helping box-up the blue plastic bags of canned goods collected from neighborhoods, “We have tens of thousands of Scouts and thousands of adult volunteers from throughout 52 counties, right down to Missouri’s boot heel. It’s just phenomenal.”

The Greater St Louis Area Council of Boy Scouts say Saturday’s drive was the third largest in their history. The grand total came to 2,195,060 items of food.

MERS Missouri Goodwill is a corporate sponsor this year.

Vice president Mark Kahrs got to experience the excitement first-hand, “This is great. I have one of my kids out here with me helping, too. It just keeps coming (the loads of donations). It’s just amazing how much stuff the community’s opened its cupboards up and donated this year.”

Scout executive Green says Scouting For Food has more than one productive outcome, “The other great benefit to this is to show people what we do, and get more children involved in the Scouting program.”

Upon collection, the food is taken to the St. Louis Area FoodBank for distribution to more than 500 area food pantries.
