A police report from the St. Charles public information officer reads in part:

Information was given that the stolen vehicle contained a small child, whose mother had just ran into the convenience store to grab a bag of chips. The vehicle was not left running however the keys were left in the ignition.
A responding officer observed a vehicle matching the description of the stolen vehicle on the shoulder of northbound Missouri Highway 94 near Burning Tree, less than a ½ mile away from the Quik-Trip. Upon arrival to the vehicle the Officer found the child still in his car seat, unharmed. The suspect was no longer in the vehicle.
Officers and a K9 unit searched the surrounding area with no results.

Police say the suspect probably panicked when he saw the child in the back seat. The child was unharmed.
