KANAB — Saturday, Best Friends Animal Society is teaming up with six Southern Utah animal rescue groups for a day of fun and fundraising to save the lives of shelter dogs and cats.

Best Friends Animal Society’s Strut Your Mutt is a multimillion-dollar fundraiser benefiting hundreds of humane organizations with events across the country. Strut Your Mutt allows people to raise money for participating local rescue groups and come together with fellow animal lovers and multiple rescue groups/shelters to celebrate.

Locally, the Best Friends Kanab Strut Your Mutt will be held at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, 5001 Angel Canyon Road in Kanab. Registration begins at 8 a.m. The 3-mile fun run begins at 9:50 a.m.; the 2-mile fun run and 2-mile and 1-mile walks begin at 10 a.m. A festival will take place throughout the event, ending at 1 p.m. The festival will include doggy-themed activities like an agility course, “pawdicures,” smooch your pooch, putt with your mutt, canine caricatures, downward dog yoga, belly dancing, face-painting for kids, contests and much more.

Kanab Mayor Robert Houston will be on hand to present awards for the top fundraisers in a variety of categories.

The goal this year is for the Kanab event to raise $60,000.

Participating groups in this year’s event are:

Because Animals Matter

Empty Bowl Pet Food Pantry

Healing HEART Sanctuary

Iron County Animal Shelter

Little Friends Foundation

Second Chance Animal Rescue

Nationally, Best Friends hopes to help raise more than $2 million through Strut Your Mutt events throughout the country; for many small animal welfare organizations these proceeds are an important part of their annual operating funds. The donations will be used to fund adoption programs, spay/neuter services and other lifesaving programs, ultimately impacting the number of pets entering and leaving shelters.

The Best Friends Kanab Strut Your Mutt local sponsors are The Canyons Collection, ERA Realty and Dick Van Patten’s Natural Balance. National sponsors are MINI and Dick Van Patten’s Natural Balance.
